223 0n sb1?

provided it was fitted proper.

Absolutly not. It is a high pressure round and needs to be on a high pressure frame. Kurt

Kurt is correct...don't even think of it.  These rifles and parts are too cheap to risk your life.

I would not do it but it may not be as bad as it sounds at first. I know guys here have reamed a 357 magnum to 357 Maximum on a sb1 frame. 223 not that much higher pressure. I also know NEF would put a 223 (along with the 357 mag, 44 mag, 45/70, and 30-30) on the older sb2 frames but not other high pressure barrels.

The SAAMI MAP for the 223 is 55kpsi compared to 40kpsi for the 357Max, so don't even consider them as comparable!  SB1 frames are cast iron, even old SB2 frames are heat treated, investment cast alloy steel, so don't make that comparison either. Here's what can happen with a 223 on a cast iron frame, this is in the FAQs btw. Using a 223 barrel on an SB1 frame is foolish, certainly not worth the loss of an eye or even worse!

I did it ONCE! I won't ever do it again and neither should you. When I pulled the trigger I got peppered in the face with hot gases and whatever else because the primer was pierced and had flowed back into the firing pin hole. I was lucky that's all I got. If the frame had blown up I probably would have lost an eye or worse. I had to pound the gun over my knee to open it up because it was stuck shut too.  LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE AND DONT DO IT. It just ain't worth it.

i was thinking it might be comparable to a 30-30
but i see on the chart a 223 is way higher

  As I recall, The older models of H&R used to share bases with 30/30, .44 mag, Hornet & shotguns.  Recently having swapped around for a Hornet barrel and having more barrels than bases, I tried (carefully and indirectly) to adapt the Hornet to an SB1 base.  I got primer swhich flowed back into the firing pin hole and even some perforated primers.  I tried low pressure (22,000 to 25,000) loads with Lil' Gun and thicker primer cups...still the primers flowed some...so it was a lost cause.  The .223 is likely to be more explosive..

You are totally correct. I apologize if it seemed that I implied it could be safe. I would never do it. I should have been more specific when I made the comparison to the 357 Max. I know those conversions were being done just a few years back when the SAAMI maximum was 48,000 cup vs 52000 for the 223. I am sure some guys are still using the old load data for the 357 Max on sb1 frames. Whether that is safe or not, I do not know.
