Remington Handi Custom Shop???
« on: February 25, 2011, 02:44:00 AM »
Why don't they do it.  They've got everything right there, and you could pick the frame, stock, barrel and sights.  I won't buy anything......not even a shotgun on a SB1 frame.  I'm concerned that my grandkids or someone may mix up barrels and frames.  It's gonna be hard enough to keep beer cold in Hell without adding that fuel to the fire.  Anything I buy or put together goes on a SB2 frame.  SB1s get sold.  I still have two spare SB2 frames and stock sets, and I'm looking at and lusting after a couple on the new accessory barrel list.  I may just do a 7.62x39 and ream it to 54R and a .444.

Yeah, thanks Tim.  Ya see what you've done to me?  Who's addicted?

I think the big problem is that the line between the addict and the enabler here is too blurred!

Pete,

There is a Handi Custom Shop on the west coast.   It is run by a couple of fellows named Wayne & Tim. ;D

Get the 444M first and I bet your 445SM will get lonely.

Tom, I know those culprits.....they're dangerous.  I just bought another SB2 frame today.  Now I'll have 3 spares again and two stock sets.  Something will fit somewhere.  Off we go again ;D ;D  That .445 isn't gonna get lonesome.  It hits what you point it at and doesn't beat you up.  I like it. ;D

as I posted in another thread, they could make complete unchambered rifles for a base price, and then charge a premium for cutting the chamber. If they can make a std 308 rifle for $240 , what would it take to make the same gun without cutting the chamber ? $200 $215 ? etc. Then if you wanted a 308 it would be $240, a 300 SAvage or 30/40 maybe $275- $290 ? What would it take, actually ?

Right now its an assembly line process, sticking done parts together, and sometimes not that well. What we are looking at here requires a well equiped shop, reamers and SKILLED workers  who wont mess up the chamber (next to the actual bore, the most critical part of the barrel). Just because they, apparently, can make money on these, as is, selling them as cheaply as they do doesnt mean that this C.S. concept would do anything more than break even. Not a good business model, that.
What might work, however, would be a private enterprise with a supply agreement for unchambered barrels or barreled actions. H&R would not have a stake in the profitability and possibly could be convinced to help make it work on that basis.
Im not sure, but wasnt the old Fox Ridge (?) for custom TC stuff a 'separate', yet closely affiliated, entity from TC?

I wasn't really thinking in terms of custom chambering, just being able to order what you wanted off their shelf.  For example, ordering a .44 Talo Barrel on a SB2 frame on a thumbhole stock with a scope ramp.  Not rocket science, and nothing their existing labor can't do.
