About that Ruger 'Bisley' grip
« on: October 25, 2010, 02:56:42 PM »
Now that Ive handled a few, I like the feel, and have noted how some of you have commented on how well it aids in shooting the bigbores for you. I also remember that the old Colt's Mdl.P rolling in the hand was considered the cat's pajamas for heavy kickers.
So, pitch me your comparisons/comments (as Ive got a G.S. coming up on Thur. night).
Also, I handled one of the .22LR Bisleys, and wonder, does that grip really offer nothing on a .22 revolver other than the same feel as your bigbore?

the original colt bisley frame was a frame made for off hand target shooting. In my hands anyway a bisley shoots better off hand then a blackhawk. The blackhawk in my hands is a little bit of a better natural pointer for snap shooting but most of my shooting is aimed shooting a bisley does better. No doubt there better for real heavy recoil but to be honest at 44 mag and heavy 45 colt level a blackhawk does just fine to for me. I have one lightweight custom 45 colt vaquero that gets on me with real heavy loads but the weight has as much to do with it as the grip frame. When you get into 5 shot 45 territory or 475 or 500 linebaugh the bisley is about a nessisity if you dont care to bleed.

The chap didnt bring it to the show but it is still available. Im thinking that, even though in excellent condition, his $500 ask is too high for me (blue with std wood) for another .22LR.
Somehow I expect that I just wont be satisfied until I have a Bisley and put it though its paces (a matter of time and $).

That $500 one is probably high but there are some variations that would be fairly priced at that amount.    Personally, I love the Bisley configuration.  Have 8 or 10 here now.  Besides the roll factor with heavier loads, the biggest plus for me is the overall feel of them.

i am down to two Ruger SA's, a 45LC NMBH 4 5/8"(blued) and a stainless Single Six w/5 1/2" barrel. Both have been converted to Bisley's. Both jobs were done at home, no trips to the gunsmith. If I decide to buy any more Ruger's they'll get the same treatment. I'm hooked on em ;)

From what I recall, its the std, but now discontinued .22LR Bisley, 6 1/2", adj. sights, blued, no mag cylinder, box or papers, nice slightly used condition. Checking 'gunbroker' it seems a bit high, but I have to factor in the benfits of private sale. Even so, my gut tells me its probably more a $400 gun than a $500, but I know sometimes Im in a time warp.
It did hang on out there nicely in my paw..........

if you bought a standard Single Six(used) and then decided you wanted it to be a Bisley by the time you bought the grip frame, hammer, and trigger then got the grip frame finished  and then buy the grips you'd need there's pretty much no way you could get it all done for $500 bucks(including the price of the gun.) When you look at it like that the $500 price tag is a pretty good deal. Go do it, you KNOW you want it 8)....Mike

I bought my 22lr Bisley (blued, 6.5 in. barrel) off of Gun Broker for $350 right at the time they were being Discontinued.  Had my 'smith shorten the barrel to 4 5/8 to match my SS .45 colt (also with Bisley), and I'm one happy camper.  Har! Har!  Sorry, just had to rub it in.

No 'rub' there at all! It is yours and I agree it is open to mods. In spite of the Ruger collector community and the apparent 'limited' or discontinued models, they are not likely to be worth much more in my lifetime so make it what you (or I) want. My heirs can whine about what I did after Im gone.

So far I havent talked myself into this revolver, as nice and as good at it is. If it were $400 it would be callin' my name, but it is 'an indulgence' at the asking price, and this economy isnt encouraging me to indulgences.
Of course, as time goes by the ask may be coming down; around here (s-WI) stuff isnt moving much at the gun shows.

Update:
I just picked up a 3 screw Super Sgl Six, 5 1/2"; somehow I think it would be bad form to go messing about with this one; maybe I will just have to 'suffer' with it as is.
But just so I know, will a new model Bisley grip frame and .22 hammer work on this? With the 5 1/2" barrel and target sights already...........
