357 mag/max question
« on: February 27, 2011, 05:06:51 AM »
Just wondering if any reloaders on here have used spire-point bullets for loads in 357?  Seems like ones designed for 35 Remington or Whelen should work?  Anyone?

Most find that the Hornady 180 SSP is perfectly suited to life with the 357 maxi fired from a rifle.  I have shot many deer with the combination with 100% success.

Since we are on the subject. Please be aware that the solitary jacketed 158 or less grain bullet that will stand up to over 2200 FPS attainable from a rifle chambered maxi was the Hornady 158 XTP FP. Avoid hollow points too. Al tho the 180 XTP HP has proven to work just fine. The Rem 180 HP shoots great in mine but I'm skeptical of over expansion.

Other excellent bullets for the Maxi are the Speer 170 GDSP and 180FP. I have shot deer with both of those too and they work very well. Forget about heavier bullets. The case capacity of the maxi is simply too small to get them moving fast enough. the 180's work exceptionally well, there is no reason to recreate the wheel.

Of coarse this is just if we are talking about big game bullets. If your just shooting, have fun and experiment!!
