IHMSA peep sights
« on: January 07, 2004, 09:37:16 AM »
The NRA is considering a rule change to allow an aperture sight "peep sight" for Hunter Pistol Silhouette in an attempt to "harmonize" or more closely follow IHMSA. They are also looking at increasing the maximum barrel length to 12" since Thompson has discontinued 10" barrels.

Anyway, what are y'all using now for sights for Field Pistol or whatever you call it in IHMSA? Specifically, what would you use on a Contender? I had just gotten a Willliams Foolproof with a blade. I can get an aperature holder for it. I'm looking at a Merit adjustable aperture.

Any thoughts?

Comments on the proposed NRA rule changes would probably be interesting too.

Bomars are probably the top choice

Williams FP sights can be a bit too busy in a match with the friction screw to deal with though they do work.   I think the NRA did adopt the 12 inch barrels.  For standing work I doubt they can be used to much advantage given iron sights.  Peeps might be useful with the taco hold, try it and let us know.

Personally, I prefer the Ken Light .030 rear notch Bo-Mar with his long tubed front sight on a full length rib.  An excellent setup when shooting with the Taco hold.

Yes, the NRA did approve the 12" barrel for Hunter Pistol.  IHMSA has not.

IHMSAeditor,

I was just wondering if you could give me a reference on the new ruling by NRA to allow 12 inch Contender barrels for Hunter Pistol.  I may need to convince the match supervisor at my club.

I just noticed that the 12 inch Hornet barrel has a one in 12 twist so I am thinking that it may shoot the 55gr boattails alright.  My one in 14 twist Hornet Barrel that I have now will not, at the speeds I have to shoot them at to keep target damage down.

Thanks,
Sixgun
You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Actually, I was informed of the NRA's rule change during a phone conversation with a friend of mine in NM.  Unfortunately, I don't have a cite from the NRA rulebook.  Suggest you check with the Silhouette division at NRA HQ.  Sorry.  Steve

I had heard of the changes, actually at that time they were proposed changes and called the NRA to find out. Greg Conner informed me that there were proposed changes. 12" barrel and an increase in weight to go along with the longer barrel and also to allow aperture sights. He said they would be considered by the committee in January. I don't know the date.

That's where the thread was headed. Since one of the matches I shoot is NRA and the other is mostly the same people, no one is using aperture sights. I was hoping for some input from IHMSA shooters that might be using apertures.

I sent an e-mail to NRA Silhouette. I'll post when I get a reply.

The Silhouette Committee met in October 2003.  All rule proposed rule changes from that meeting go before the full Board of Directors for approval at their Annual  Meeting (this weekend, in fact, Jan 10-11) --- All rule changes approved by the  Board will be on-line next week on the Competitive Shooting Program part of the  NRA website (www.nrahq.org)  - or you may sign up for e-mail updates using the below link.  If you would reply back with which Silhouette Pistol rules you are specifically interested I will be happy to send you an e-mail next week when I have official rule approvals.
