« on: April 08, 2004, 02:00:01 PM »
I hope to make a plains game hunt next year. I have a chance to buy a Interarms in 375 H&H. I will shoot it this weekend. Anybody have experience with this rifle?

How old is it?  I have an Interarms "Alaskan" in 375 that's about 25 years old that shoots 1 1/2 inch groups with 300 gr loads all day or until you can't stand it any longer.  Frustrates me because I'd like to get another but can't justify it when this one shoots so well.  The "Whitworths" appear to be a good rifle but haven't shot one.  Mine is a standard action opened up at the bottom to handle the longer cartridge.  This has been a standard practice for years and doesn't seem to effect the strength of the action with factory loads.  Try it and if it shoots I'd get it.

I don't know how old it is, it is at least 10 years old though. It was an
Alaskan that he restocked with a Witworh, I gave 500 for it, I have steel bases and Werner rings on the way for it, a back up ghost ring, and a high power firing pin spring. it put 5 fed bearclaws in a group 1/2 in high and about 1 and a 1/4 wide, the all touched, the next 3 went into a another group about 1'' at 11 o'clock  about 2" high. It is double grouping I will bed it and try a different scope.
Thanks for the reply

The rifle will most likely need bedding, because the Whitworth and the Interarms Alaskan are quite different in configuration!  The Whitworth has a larger diameter barrel, and has a second recoil lug, on the barrel, about 4 inches ahead of the reciever ring.  The Interarms is likly moveing in the over roomy stock.   The Alaskans  sometimes split stocks in the 375H&H, and 458 Win Mag, because of the lack of the forward recoil lug!

Both rifles are made on the same action. a ZESTAVA, made on FN machinery, But the Whitworths were polished a little better, and they were barreled, and stocked  in Mannchester Eng,  while the Interarms Mausers were barreled, and stocked  here in the USA.   I would add the recoil lug on the barrel, if it were me, but I would sure glass the action tightley.  The recoil lug on the barrel should be glassed in on the back side only, and relieved on the  front, and sides.

I have two of the Whitworths, both chambered for 375 H&H, one in a synthetic stock for Alaska hunting, which is usually in rain.  The other is in the factory stock, and is used in Africa, where it is as dry as the moon!  They are very good rifles, if the owner will only do the things needed to make them VERY good!

You were right on the money, the stock started to split behind the tang,
I glass  bedded properly and installed two mecury recoil reducers, One in the butt one in the fore-arm, three shoots often go less than MOA. I blooded the rifle nov 15  cow elk 300 yrds +, 260 accubonds reloader #15 @ 2775 fps.
