I'm ignorant.  At how many fps is the line?

Thanks, I thought it was about a grand.  I found Trail Boss at Gander Mountain this weekend and want to put together subsonic loads with it for plinking and small game.  I ran "Charlie", my new Charlie Feist for the first time yesterday and was very pleased.  We were skunked, but he worked very hard and always stayed in sight of me.  I've got a neighbor who's loaded with gray and black squirrels and Charlie and I will hunt there next season with the maxi and TB .38s.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I have a new beagle too.  He's about two years old and was too playful and tough on two geriatric beagles my friend had so he gave him to me.  His name is Max and he should fit in well with my Maxi.

There's a lot of factors that weigh in to what subsonic is where you are.  1000 fps would be the safest bet, but 1050 shouldn't give you much trouble.

I dont really know much about how altitude, barometric pressure, temperature, etc. affect the speed of sound, but last weekend I was developing subsonic 30-30 loads and got as high as 1085 fps without hearing the crack.  At 1050 you should be safe.

speed of sound varies with altitude, temp. and a few other factors.  Speed of sound is slower in a less dense (higher) atmosphere.  The 1000 to 1050 FPS is a good estimate for folks on the ground.

The speed of sound is real close to 1100 fps. If you load for 1050 it gives you a little wiggle room before getting the crack.

with air rifles aka pellet guns, competitors try to keep velocities below 950 fps to stay away from the sound barrier.  (for improved shot consistency aka accuracy)  The reason is the buffeting the pellet encounters as it nears the speed of sound, assumed to be aprox. 1050 fps.  So for accuracy or shot to shot consistency I'd recommend something around 900 fps.  For just quiet ::) well, under 1050 fps

I keep my loads just below 1000 fps.   With the suppressor there is just a whisper.
