It's nice to see the sun again in the morning.  And by the time it goes down now, it's almost time to go to bed.  We now have 11 hours of sunlight, with an hour of twilight on both sides.  We are gaining 7 minutes of sunshine a day.

A few weeks ago the sun came up in the S by SE and set in the S by SW.  More South then anything.  Each day it comes up a significantly more to the east, and sets a bit more to the west.  Last week I noticed it was no longer shining directly in my face as I headed out to the gym and drove on Dawson Rd, that runs directly North and South.  It was a bit off the the left, and above the roof of the car.  Finally not hugging the horizon. 

As I went to get the paper this morning at about 6:30 it was still dark, but the sky in the North East was glowing.  The glow moved south and got brighter.Then at seven thirtysix the sun popped up in the South East.  This evening it will set in the South West.  By solstice it will be rising in the North East, and setting in the North West.  A few weeks after that we will not see darkness again till next fall.  Yes it will get dark for another month or so, but we will be in bed before it gets dark and the sun will be up before we get up.



During the months of June and July it won't get dark.  The sun will go down just below the horizon, then come right back up.  You know how it is the first 10 minutes after the sun sets down South?  That's what we will have the entire time the sun is down, all three hours of it.  If we run up the Haul Rd a couple of hundred miles, the sun won't set.

One thing I think is very funny.  We will be out during the summer fishing.  Tourist will be in the river fishing, catching fish, and having a good time.  They will catch a big King and fight it to the bank, then set down and make the comment, "Man I'm tired, don't know why I am so sleepy".  That's when we tell him it 3:30 in the morning.  He then looks confused and states, "But the sun is shining".   We tell him, "It just came back up".  "But it never got dark," he says.  I look at him and say, "Your in Alaska".

You just share any time.As far as I'm concerned.love to hear your stories.My Sis used to live in Palmer.Worked at a bank there.She just moved last year i think.Down to northern Cali.Can't imagine moving from up there.Hope to make the trip some day.

I know Sourdough doesn't think much of Southeast Alaska, but that is as far as I could make it. I lived in Sitka for a time and remember sitting outside on the deck, reading a book at 11 PM. I also remember putting aluminum foil over my bedroom windows so I could sleep. Just a couple of memories.

I wonder what this would do to a 3rd shifter? I've been trying to adjust to the "overnight" shift for the last couple of months. I thought I had the hang of it, but now it's light when I go home and instead of going right to sleep I toss and turn.  I didn't have much trouble when it was still dark .   :-\  I think it would be great to enjoy a "day" outdoors from 7p to 7a instead of being stuck in the dark all the time, lol.

Well, now if you could get rid of the extreme cold and dark in the winter and the mosquitoes, Alaska might start looking alright, but you'll never see me up there again.

I've finally come to the conclusion that nowhere on this planet is perfect; we all have to pick our brand of poison.

All week it's been beautiful.  Clear sunny skys, temps up in the 20s during the day, shirt sleeve weather.  It's still dropping down to 20 below zero at night, but the Northern Lights are making up for it this week.

20 degrees shirt sleeve weather!!!! It gets down to 40 degrees at night, I wear a jacket in the morning, it gets up to 70 about 9 AM I find that to be shirt sleeve weather.

C'mon back to the West Phoenix area.It's allready 90 degress. After 55 summers here, I really dread summer anymore. Sigh :(

Right behind you Mauser, I live in the Mojave Desert. Been real nice this weekend also.
20 degrees shirt sleeve weather :o, a couple more years I'll be headed out of the desert and into a more reasonable climate.

mauser98us:  Been there done that.  I've lived in Southern Nevada, West Pheonix area (Glendale, Goodyear), Alamogordo NM, liked it, but also like North Pole, Alaska.  Sort of got tired of living in an oven.  Yea living in North Pole is like living in an ice box, but you can always put on more clothes, you can only take off so many.  Plus the summers are beautiful, temps in the 70s, 80s, and sometimes even into the 90s.  Not near as crowded here in Alaska.  The only home invaders we have in my area are Grizzlies and Black Bears.

I remeber you saying you lived here,that's why I said c'mon back.I was raised and still live in the Goodyear area. If you havn't been here in a while you would be shocked at the growth. And with all the extra concrete and paving, it's even hotter and longer. Summer runs from March til Thanksgiving now.

I also have relatives that live in Pheonix, Masa, and Scottsdale.  I was there three years ago in July.  I was passing through, stopped and spent a week with them.  It was 110 deg. really gave the A/C on my car a work out.  It's a good place to spend the winter, but come spring I am out of there.
