Building a Winchester 88 in 358

I had a bolt action made up in 358 Win a few years back. I liked it so much I wanted a repeater. Original 88 are too pricy to hunt with so I bought one, from a GreyBeard member, in 308 and have sent it to Norman Johnson of High Plains Re-Boring. He quoted a price of $250 to re-bore and re-chamber to 358. The gun shot well to begin with and I am anxious to get it back. Buy the way, it was already restocked and refinished so I am not messing with a collectible. Shotgunner

   How soon do expect this rifle to be in your hot little hands??   I have a 99 in 358 a friend from Pa. gave me many years ago..So far I have only shot antelope, whitetails and hogs with it..It is a sweet rifle, but the shorter stroke of the 88 is very nice, plus the box magazine makes it a fine rifle for Pa..congradulations...Nice to hear someone getting a rifle they have longed to own...

I have hunted with a Winchester 88 in .284 since 1965 and think they are the best.  I have several others and other rifles but that old 88 is what I grew up with and everyone used that or a Remington 760.  I am looking forward to a report on your re-bored Win.88 when you get it back.  Good luck and good shooting.

Many year ago I had an 88 in 308 rebored to a 338-08 (338 Federal).
I got back a real tack driver, great guns, hope yours turns out as good as mine did.

I had been warned about the trigger being bad. I don't know about the others, but this one has a great trigger. Maybe not under 3 lbs, but crisp. I hope to see the gun before the summer is over, and have time to work with it before hunting season. I know that if a gunsmith is good, he is busy, so I do not rush them. Shotgunner
