What's to hunt in North Georgia?
« on: March 23, 2011, 05:24:16 PM »
Hi guys.  I'm a current Ohioan with a job offer in the mail for a position in Alpharetta, Ga.  I like to fish, and hunt ducks, geese and deer up here in Ohio.  What kind of an impact to my hunting life would a move do to me?  Obviously the salary will be important but if I have to give up hunting or if it becomes a real PITA, I'm going to have to think twice about the move.

Thanks,
Sean

Ah Sean...

First, Alpharetta is not north Jawja.   ::)  North Fulton County - yes, North Jawja - no.   We be in the Piedmont Region  of Jawja.  ;D

Nowadays property to lease for hunting is harder to find and the price per acre is getting very expensive.  We got plenty of land being the biggest state east of the Mississippi, but we have a lot of hunters also.  You will find that most huntable land is (a) posted by the owners 'cause they hunt themselves or, (b) leased to hunting clubs.

Fortunately, as B'eye said, there is a lot of public land in the form of National Forests and State Wildlife Management Areas.  You'll be able to hunt if you want to, it just might take some effort to find a place to go.

You bought yo'sef a rifle-gun yet boy?   ???  I know you ain't from around here but not many Jawja deer hunters use a shoots-guns... 'ceptin maybe them dog hunters...  :D

I unloaded my groundhog rifle about 10 years ago, a Remmy 788 in .243 Win.  Since I moved off the farm (for the USN) I haven't done any groundhog hunting.  The only rifle in the cabinet right now is an old 8mm Mauser.  You guessed it right.  I've got lots of shotguns and pistols.  I may have to sell a couple and pick up a good rifle.  I think bears or boars would be a fun switch.   What's the waterfowling look like down there?  I see there are specific regs for Lanier.  Do you get good flights of birds?

I unloaded my groundhog rifle about 10 years ago,

Ground hogs were virtually unknown around here until a few years ago.  There's getting to be more of them in spots north of Atlanta, but I wouldn't count on finding many places to hunt them.

I think bears or boars would be a fun switch.

Same thing for bears and feral hogs.  Bears are increasing and every once in a while one will wander down into this area.  A sow was killed by a car right around I-75 & I-285 some time back and then 2 large cubs in close locations within a few days.  One about 3 miles from my house.  Again, hunting areas for them are spotty, I haven't heard of a "bear lease" yet but there is plenty of room in the Chattahoochee National Forest!   ;D

Feral hogs are basically a pest, and unlike wildlife they belong to the landowner so they can be hunted year around.  I would imagine that most people that hunt them do so on their deer lease.  Again, populations are spotty.  For example, from what gstewart44 tells me his lease down around Waycross is overrun with them.  We have just begun to see sign of them in the area I hunt, about 25 miles north of him.  As a wild guess, I'd say if you drew a line from Savannah to the Alabama line west of Macon, you'd include most of Georgia's hog population.  Our WMA's normally have days set for hog hunting.

Again, look to the WMA's.  I've hunted property that had the odd local duck or two on it and Canada Geese, local and migratory, are pretty abundant.  But I personally don't know anybody who is an avid waterfowl hunter.  What about the rest of you Jawja boys?

Dove we got but the shoots are social events or pay as you go unless you plant your land (owned or leased) for them.  Quail hunting used to be great in Georgia but I haven't had a bird dog since my last one died some 25 years ago.  The change in farming practice I guess.  Covies are to small and spread out to make having a bird dog worthwhile for me.

Turkey are just about everywhere.  As are those darn coyotes!

Archery, Primitive Weapon then the General Gun seasons for deer begin to open around mid-September and run through mid-January.  You are allowed 12 deer, not counting the ones killed on WMA hunts.  Small game opens with squirrel season in August, I never shoot them before the first frost because of wolves, and mostly runs through February 28th.  then Turkey season starts in March, this weekend I believe, and runs 'till mid - May with a season limit of 3.  That gives you June, July and August to get your stands and such ready for the next deer season.  Not to mention the fact that a man got to fish sometime!   :P  'sides, them fields and woods can get awful hot in the summer!   ;D

I assume you have a copy of the game laws as you talk about Lanier's waterfowl regs.  There's lots a good info in them.  If not, go here:  http://www.georgiawildlife.com/  Also, give me your address and I'll send you a copy of Georgia Outdoor News.  You can subscribe to that monthly magazine if you want to.  It's pretty informative.

Thanks AtlLaw.  Lots of good info and just what I was looking for.  The leases range quite a bit in price I'm finding out.  I just saw one near Alpharetta mentioned on a traditional bowhunting site for around $500 per person but Traditional only.  Not bad if we get to spend time with other critters than deer.  My boys enjoy shooting bows and that'd be good family time.

By the way, I had to look hard at your avatar to see if it wasn't my Dad.  Also a Nam vet who shares your wardrobe, stature and hair/beard color.  If I saw you on a Harley you might BE him.

You were right on target.  They are definitely in the neighborhood.  When I was stationed in Charleston, I had a Great Pyrennes.  What a sweetheart she was.  She loved to get sheared like a sheep going into summertime.  I bet that big woofer of yours would be great at keeping the coyotes and bears away.

Well, the job didn't work out so I'll be staying up here in Ohio.  All the same, thanks for the information.  Good to know for the next time.
