10mm Choices
« on: December 27, 2003, 02:50:41 AM »
Well guys, it was a hard decision, but I finally took the 10mm plunge. I had narrowed my choices down to the Glock mdl 20 and the EAA EA10. There were several factors that influenced my decision. The Glock 20 is the same platform as my 21. It would fit in my duty gear and LE hi cap magazines are cheap and readily available. The mdl 20 has a lot going for it with Glock reliability and conversion barrels cheap and plentiful. On the other hand, I have never owned a pistol based on the CZ platform, but have heard nothing but good things about them. Price wise, I could pickup a near new Glock 20 for about $375-400. The EA10, with the wonder finish NIB for under $350. The EAA can be carried with the hammer down in the tradional DA mode, or in the 1911 style "cocked and locked" mode. Should I want them, barrels are available on the net for under $100 for caliber conversions. The EA10 comes with one magazine, so I'd have to purchase additional mags which would bump up the initial investment somewhat. I don't think any LE mags have been made for this gun, so if I want hicaps I'd have to pay dearly. Well,---------------------I've owned, and still own Glocks. Time to get something new! I ordered the EA10 today. I don't see a need for the hicaps at the price they go for, so I'll go with the lower price 10 rd mags and still come in under the price of the Glock!  It's too late to make a difference, but any input on the CZ design/performance would be interesting.
Thanks,
Savage

Good choice, I bought a Witness 10MM compact 3 or 4 months ago, and it is one of my favorite handguns, accurate and dependable.
I'm looking to buy another 10MM, and it will probably be the Dan Wesson Pointman Major to go along with my DW 45ACP I already have and is the most accurate of all my self-defense or target handguns.
life is too short to spend it with an ugly gun....

I've been itching for one of those EAA 10mm Full size jobs for a while now, myself.  Never got around to ordering one, but I love the feel of them.  Well, that and my CZ-75B fits me like a glove, shoots like a dream, and all the other cliche things you can say about one.

I had a EAA compact in 10mm, it was a POS and they had no desire to make it right, so there won't be any of their handguns in the vault in the future. I don't think the compact model has the slide mass to handle the round, especially the original Norma ammo and handloads.  It had a nasty habit of stapling you in the forhead with a spent casing, which it would easily sling 50 feet through the air, about 1 out of 5 rounds.  The gun wouldn't feed for anything until  I performed the work .340 Wthby mentioned.  I haven't fired the full size model, so I can't speak to it's abilities.

Glocks are great guns for their intended purpose, I've fired both the compact and full size 10mm's, but I'm not a Glock fan.

I finally recieved my Kimber Target II in 10mm, I'd say that's probably the best thing going right now.  It was a limited run, but they are still available.  I've only put 1000 rounds through mine in the last few weeks, but it is a keeper.  Not a pistol you'd ever regret buying, that much is for certain.  If you like the idea of being able to use the pistol close up and being able to hit targets at 100 yards, there really is no other option in the 10mm that isn't custom/semi-custom.

KciH, and all, A HAPPY & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!!
Thank you all for your input and comments! I am an avid shooter, and that's the kind of company I keep. In my circles I have heard both pro & con on the Wittness. From what I have learned from your experiences and those of my fellows here on this board. I think the basic CZ platform is a sound one. If my example proves to be an exception, you can bet it won't stay around long! I still have the option of choosing the Glock 20 which I can buy from my local LE gun runner for about the same money. I have first hand knowledge of the performance of that platform. Again, all the best from the Savage!

If you wanted a 10 MM that would last forever be accurate and not at all pick about what you feed it look at a S&W Mod 610 4" or 6" . You can also shoot 40 S&W in them and not have to pick up your brass.

Jim,
You're correct. Problem is, the 10mm loses it's appeal as a revolver cartridge. What makes the 10 interesting to me, is the near magnum performance in an autoloader. The 41 and 44 mags are somewhat more powerful than the 10mm, and I already own a 4" mdl 29. I also own a SB in 45LC, so as you can see I have the revolvers covered. Of Course a barrel change in my full size Kimber would give me simular performance in the 400 Cor Bon--------or a 45 Super-----Ah, shucks, still want a 10!!

We both like the 10's but honestly, with proper reloading - and I don't mean limiting yourself to Cor-Bon reloads parameters, the 400 Cor-Bon can be loaded to pack more wallop than the straight cased 10mm.

You can easily load 170, 180 or 200 grain bullets into the 400 case, and you can load bullets of the most effective profile, the semi-wadcutter, into that bottlenecked case without feeding problems.  I have found I could push 180 gn swcs to better than 1300+ during summer silly-wet shoots, and the same loads worked well on whitetail out to magnum pistol distances.  You could save yourself some $ with just a barrel change, still have your 10mm bore/caliber, but get better results.  HTH.  Mikey.

I hear ya Mikey! I'm a lazy reloader, don't like to reload bottleneck pistol rounds. I got off the pad (lube) when the carbide dies came out and have no desire to go back. The rifle ammo I shoot in quanity, .223/7.62x39, I buy in bulk. Too time consuming to reload, especially as cheap as it is. My AR/AKs don't mind the mil surp stuff. Love loading the straight wall cases on the progressive with the carbide dies!!! Besides, I need a new pistol!

Get the Kimber while the gettin's good.

I went round and round with 10's.  If you're a 10mm fan, it's a godsend.

Kimber or a Delta +$1000 and a year waiting to make it into the pistol the Kimber is out of the box?  It was an easy question for me to answer.  I answered it by ordering the Kimber within 15 minutes of the time  I found out they where to be made.

You can buy a Tanfoglio or Glock anytime, don't pass this up.

Bottleneck pistol cartridges?  1200+fps with a 200gr bullet isn't enough for you in a 1911?  Get a LAR Grizzly.

There is nothing a .357 Sig will do that a .38 Super won't.  I have the same opinion when it comes to the .400 Cor-bon and the 10mm.  Don't bother me with arguments about the "worthwhile" advantage of 50 fps.  That would be provided that a 10mm won't push a 180 at 1300fps, which is a notion for those who have never loaded it.

KciH,
I am a Kimber fan and owner. I have no doubt that the Kimber offering is the best out there. Had the good fortune to shoot a friend's SS Delta Elite many times over a couple of years. He sold it for $600. This was a series 80 Colt, and I was not impressed. Therefore, I had to pass on it. Worked with an officer that carried a Glock 20 primary and a 29 for offduty. Both good, reliable, and accurate handguns. I carry a mdl 21 Glock and sometimes a SS Classic Target Kimber for primary duty weapons. If I bought the mdl 20 or the DE, they would fit right in my duty rigs. Having no real need for the 10mm as a duty weapon, I wanted to try something different. Enter the Wittness! Never owned a CZ or clone. The $350 price with the wonder finish, made me feel ok about buying one! I load only straight wall pistol cases. I don't care for the bother and mess of lubing cases. The real or imagined advantages to bottleneck cases, along with small velocity gains means little to me. The ability to deliver an efficient projectile at an effective velocity, accurately, is what I expect from the handgun. The straight wall pistol cases fill that nitche.
