That is one huge quake. It goes to show you how well Japan has prepared. This is listed as an 8.9, Haiti was listed as 7.0, the scale is logarithmic meaning this thing was almost 100 times as powerful.

How many tax payer's dollars do you suppose our government will send to aid Japan?

I think the amount of money we send to Japan should be no more than what the Japanese government sent to aid us after Katrina... which as far as I know was zero.

Japan sits on the Ring Of Fire, and the edge of the Tectonic Plate, what do they expect.  Anchorage Alaska also sits on the Ring.  LA, and San Fransisco, sit at the edge of the same plate.  Their day is coming.  Glad I no longer live in Anchorage.

That 9 earth quake that hit Alaska about eight or ten years ago was 250 miles away from here.  It was out in the middle of now where, yet it definately got our attention.  I've still got cracks in the walls of my house from it.  I never want to go through one of those near the epacenter.  I don't care how the building are built, some are coming down.  My luck I would be in the one that falls.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

How much public US debt does Japan own? What if they need to to call those loans all at once to help rebuild?

I remember reading about a big tsunami in Alaska which I thought happened in the 40's, but it was 1958. Here is a link to an article about it. I guess it was the worlds biggest tsunami with a 1720 foot wave. Caused by rock and ice falling into the water, caused by an earthquake. Sourdough I'm sure you have heard stories about it, being you are from that neck of the woods.
I wonder if the article is true about the wave height. Maybe it was 720 feet high. I just can't imagine a wave hitting 1720 feet high, but the article says that it cleared vegetation at that height.

Look at the differance in Haiti and Japan. At least the Japanese are trying to help themselves and you aren't hearing them complain that no body is helping while at the same time attacking those giving out food and medical help like the Haitians did! They are standing patiently in line for things and stores, that were not damaged, opened their doors and gave food away free. Yeah, Haiti is a poor country but being poor is no excuse for the way many of them behaved.  I watched a Haitian woman screaming that her child was trapped under ruble. There was a crowd of grown men and women around her and the woman and everyone in the crowd were yelling at the reporter that her child was trapped and there was no help. Not one of those people tried lifting one piece of ruble, which they easily could have done. Instead they just stood there complaining. My heart goes out to the Japanese but I'm sick of hearing about the poor unfortunate Haitians!
