slight barrel wiggle
« on: March 13, 2011, 09:01:23 AM »
Hello all,new here and just got my first handi-rifle.
Heavy barrel 22-250, noticed a little side to side movement, read the FAQ's and did some shimming
seemed to fix it, but my question is this  There is some wear marks on the pivot pin, could a person press the pin out turn it 180 degrees and reinstall to an area that's not worn?
also the gun won't lock up on a fired case but will lock up tight on a new round .
this is a very informative site, I'm glad I found it

when you say "won't lock up on a fired case"....... was this case fired from another rifle ?
if so, thats normal.... its been fire formed to a different chamber.
do you handload or use factory ammo ?

factory ammo, load round ,shoot, unload, put fired case back in wont lock, put new round in gun locks tight
I'm going to reload for this gun, just have to order dies and bullets, thinking 55gr V-MAX

Fairly normal for a handi rifle.  They have a small amount of frame flex when fired so the fire-formed case is not exactly chamber length,  it is a little longer.  It's been my experience that you need to bump the shoulder back just slightly to get consistent lockup.

Short Go/No Go gauges check your chamber with a new round fully inserted. extractor/ejector depressed and a straightedge.
Any gap to barrel breech?
With no round in, close it up and check barrel to standing breech with a feeler gauge, then check headspace.

I don't agree with this at all. I can chamber a spent case in all my Handi's and the action closes fine. Frame flex is more myth than fact. If a 22-250 could flex a Handi frame that much a 500 S&W would tear it apart. ;)

after putting 40 rds. through it and three good cleanings, it is now locking up on both new and fired rds. must have been a little dirty, since i did get this used.
thank you for the replys
