357Max

If I were to have a 357mag barrel fitted to my SB1 receiver, would that be safe to ream to 357Max? I looked through quite a few older posts and couldn't find anything about if the pressures may be to high.

I believe, yes, it can be done.  But, do yourself a favor and put it on a SB2 frame......and never worry.  All my centerfire rifles are on SB2 frames, and I have two spares.  If you sell the SB1 and buy a SB2 you're only out 50 or 60 bucks.  Then you can put any Handi barrel on it.  It's just the way I do it.

Pete's idea is a good one, however; I have one on a sb1 frame and have loaded up to the max load with aa1680 with no problems.  Tim and I deduced that  the topper came fitted with a 30/30 barrel, the sb1 is a stronger frame than the old topper, and the case head on the 357maxi is smaller than the 30/30, so all that translates into less (or at least the same) breach thrust than the 30/30 on a stronger frame.

(Disclaimer, I think this is all correct......typing from memory and you know how that is.)

That question is specifically answered in the FAQs link 357 Max on an SB1 Frame, the first place you should look for answers.  ;)

Sounds right to me Bobby, I think H&R would put 30-30 barrels on SB1 frames if they had marketing incentive like the Indiana pistol cartridge deer season did for the 357 and 44 mags.  :-\

Thanks Tim and everyone else, I didn't see that in the faqs when I was looking for it. I think I will just go ahead and use an SB2 frame anyways.

I'm new at reloading, and tend to be very conservative.  I'm glad you chose the SB2.  Now you're free to do about anything you want.

I've got some 200gr. hardcast from Reeds for my Maxi. Now that the snow is starting to go away I might be able to shoot it. My 357 is probably the most versatile rifle I own. :D

My little Maxi is the most versatile rifle I own.  I've got boxes of .38s, .357s and Maxis sitting here waiting for the snow and the wind to go away..  My maxi only needs a tweak or two on the scope to be right on.  The same with my .500, .30-30, .22-250 and others.  I just need to get out of this winter weather.

Spring's coming Pete... the sooner the better. ;D
I actually got out for a little while a few days ago. I took the 45-70 and some of my 405gr. cast loads. Set up a steel target at 200 yds. and practiced hitting the center of it from the bench. After I got the hold figured I was hitting it every shot. It was something like this.... BANG... wait for it....DING!! ;D Once the snow clears completely I can set up to about 350yds. and do some practicing. ;)
