Hastings fully rifled barrel for home defense with buckshot

I have a Hastings fully rifled barrel on my A-5 Browning.  Presently it sits in my house for the purpose of home defense, loaded with #4 Buck.   Can anyone give me any idea of what kind of patterns it will produce at ranges up to 25 feet.  I am anticipating patterns larger than a standard choked shotgun barrel would produce, and with a bit of a vortex effect.   Do I need to worry about the vortex being so large that it would be a problem for me to hit a person sized target up to the ranges specified?

Yes, I know I can wait for the snow to melt so I can go to the range and shoot it myself.  Thanks for your help!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

At 25 ft it shouldn't be much of a problem.At 25 yds,forget it and wait till the BG gets within 25 ft.

I'll tell you what I found out shooting a pellet load through a rifled barrel. I have a 12 ga scoped Remington 870 with a Hastings rifle barrel that I shot with Winchester X #4 steel shot just to see what would happen. The shot pattern was 2' low and 4' to the left of point of aim at 30'. I would not call that a reliable home defense gun. Pattern it and see what yours will (or will not) do and let that decide!

yep ! Browning says its ok to shoot shot thru. their rifled bbls others say no. I would guess it would depend on load and wheather it had shot protectors or not. Rate of twist would make a difference . IE a fast rate of twist with plated unprotected shot would most likely lead the shot colum to strip the rifling leaving outside pellets with a flat side on the other end soft shot or shot protected with plastic thru a slow twist might pick rotation. I would guess either would not spread more than 12 inches at that range . That said if you center the target you may miss on sides but high and low ya got it.  ;)

why buckshot? birdshot is a lot better, less over penetration and collateral damage. a face full of birdshot will stop anything or anybody i know of. and if applied at the waste it is 100% fatal they die of uremic poisoning after many attempts to repair the damage. I keep a 410 double barrel loaded with #6 ready to go.

shoot at something about 30 yds out in some water and have an area a couple of hundred yards long and wide that you are shooting into. ear

Stay away from rifled barrels when shooting ANY buckshot!
 
Tried shooting #3Buck in a 20gauge M870 and at 20 feet, the wad would hit the target!  And the pellets formed a donut like pattern around it with a big gaping blank spot in the middle of the target, except for the hole from the wad.
 
Buckshot only works best from a smooth barrel!
