Hi Pan,

I have a 6.5" and use 20gr H110 with a 250gr Cast.  It isn't as accurate as I'd like though, so I may reduce the load a bit.  I also use the same load with the 210gr JHP...shoots really nice!!

Thank you Drdougrx.I havnt used h110 yet.I have been shooting 2400,18grns,pan. with 190&250 gr cast, and they shoot pretty well.My gun seems to like the heavyer slugs with that powder.Im lookin for dif.powders and dif.bullet combenations, because as you know its hard to find dif.powders when you need them :(.Having a few dif.load combinations keeps ya shooting and hiting what your aiming at. :).Thanks again.pan.

While we like the idea of the heavier bullets in the 41 it is a known fact that it is hit or miss if your Ruger 41 will shoot bullets over 250 grains.  Seems like the Ruger runs about a 20 twist.  My custom 41 that John Gallagher is building is using a S&W barrel that runs about an 18 twist.  I have hopes that my 270 LFN GC will shoot in it...  John Taffin played a part in FAs decision to use a 14 twist in their 41s...

FWIW I bought a 41 Bisley Hunter from Lee Jurras....  He sent me Sierra 170 grain JHCs to shoot it it...

Thanks for the informantion Axehandle.250 Grs is all the WT. i want to shoot. That heavy is plenty for me,it shoots pretty good for me.I hope you have good luck with your custom gun.The 170 also shoot pretty good. Most of the pills i have shot in my gun will shoot well if i do my part.Like i stated 2400 seems to be the powder for this gun.Im gonna try H110 as soon as i can to see if i can get another load.pan.

Very cool Pan.  I've been dreaming about one of those.  Some how that 4 5/8 just looks right and will probably carry nicely. I don't really enjoy carrying my 7.5 Bisley or Redhawk.  So the Mt Gun gets to play more often. I generally seem to shoot the 4 inchers better than the long tubes. The bullet gets out the barrel quicker and I have less time to wobble off target.

But I think if you want velocity you'll get more with the H110 /296 loads. I do like 2400 and load a fair bit in the 41. For moderate cast loads I use Unique or Herco with good results. For real heavy cast or jacketed bullets you might try 4227. I've used it some with 250 jacketed bullets with good results. I've played with Lil Gun too but I'm not sure I like it.

Ax, I was unaware of the twist issue on heavy bullets. I'll have to work more with my Rugers to see.  I'm not that hot with my long barrels. While mostly its me NO DOUBT, your comment gets me to wondering. I've had really good accuracy with the old Rem 170 bullet in my Bisley. Sure wish they still made them - I don't do as well with the 170 Sierra. AL 8 turned out to work real well with some unknown brand of 210-215 cast bullet once too.

Years ago I helped my buddy work up a cast load for his 4-5/8"
It turned out that a 240 gr cast SWC (from LEE as I recall) and 8 gr of Unique was very accurate & quite mild.
Bumped up to 10 gr of Unique, it was considerably more powerfull, but accuracy began to drop off.

I just cast some 240 grain Lee SWC's. My starting load will be Unique at 8-9 grains. I should get to shoot within the next week or so. My blackhawk is also 4 5/8" in 1 mag. I'll post a range report either here or down in the cast bullet forum here on GBO. Good luck with yours. Charlie

Now I'm kinda nervous!  I loaded some 250gr cast before I sent the gun back to Ruger.  Seems the cylinder pin was walking out.  They were not very accurate, but I only shot 20 or so.  Maybe I'll back off my load a bit or load a lighter bullet.  I want this gun for hunting and I was hoping to be able to use the "heavy".

Pan, please don't take this wrong, but I'd suggest you get a good loading manual if you don't have one & use that as your guide. Loads given by another even though they work very well in their guns are just that loads for their guns, myself included. I'd always check someone else's loads against the loading manual mine included. I'm not suggesting anyone is incompetient, just urging caution.
With that said, you are going to really like the .41 mag, it's a great cartridge & the Ruger is a great gun. You will like them both there are no bad things to watch for with the .41 mag. feed it a reasonable load & it will shoot very well and be a lot of fun to shoot. I't also powerful enough for anything we have any business shooting with a handgun. Enjoy it.  ;)

Nearly 30 years ago I 'stumbled' onto a load for my Blackhawk that would group 5/8" most any time;) BUT we don't hunt off a bench and those tiny groups become basically meaningless when the adrenaline is flowing. One antelope I shot at an "extended" distance with my Blackhawk was with a load that wouldn't group 6" off the bench, but every animal shot with that load had really good shot placement. Go Figure!

I have come to believe the Ruger 41Mag was designed to shoot for real - not to be tested.. ;D

Panman,

Welcome to the .41 lovers club. I think you will find that 7.0-8.0 grains of Unique with 210-230 grain bullets will perform very well for general shooting and practice. After you shoot a bunch of those, you can move up to heavier charges of Unique, 2400 or W296 for hunting if you feel the need for more velocity.

So far, everything I shoot in my Ruger .41's is very accurate.

My next suggestion is to send the revolver to Alan Harton for trigger work and a .10 inch wide patridge front sight blade.

Ken

If you go to Hodgdon's website,(data.hodgdon.com), they have a large amount of load data for the .41. And everything else for that matter. From 170 to 265gr loads and lots of them. I emailed the pages I wanted to myself and stored them for future use. Also, handloads.com. One favorite load of mine that is safe to print is 7.5grs of W-231 under a 215gr SWC cast with WW in a RCBS mold. 1100fps with 5.5'' barrel. I ordered an LBT mold for a Redhawk I had, a 300gr WLN-GC. Won't give the charge weight but it is lots of H 110. A very compressed load. Just under 1500fps with a 5.5''bbl. I like things  as simple as possible so I only use H 110 for intense loads and W 231 for lower velocity loads. The 231 takes care of my .38s and .45s also. I shoot these loads in my  Rugers but not the 300gr in my S&Ws. The mold was custom cut for the Redhawk at .411. My Smiths bore size is .408. I tried it once and almost blew up a pinned and recessed M 57 4''. The cases were stuck so tight in the cylinder that I had to bang on the ejector to get them out. Really should not have tried it on a really hot summer day. Made it worse. Can't come much closer to blowing one up than that. If your going to play with heavy loads work up very slowly and keep in mind that hot temps, like summer, increase pressure. For best accuracy keep bullet weights at 250grs or lighter. Twist rates aren't fast enough in Rugers or Smiths to handle the big boys. I use to think bigger is better but now I think lighter with a large flat nose and faster is best. Good luck and good shooting !
