who dresses in full camo?
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:52:49 PM »
So we got to talkin the other day and started talkin bout how necessary camo really is when deer hunting. Typically I wear forest green overalls and a blaze orange parka and have had deer pass within 10 yards of me and never see me. I am more interested in quiet clothing than camo. Others don't share my point of view. What yall think?  :)

I wear camo in quiet clothing for hunting, with a blaze orange vest or cap, only because it distinguishes my hunting clothing from the rest of my clothing, not because I feel it offers any real advantage. The only time there's an advantage is turkey hunting. Then no blaze orange.

I only wear blaze when deer hunting. Any other type of hunting I do wear full camo but since deer are color blind and other hunters are toting high powered rifles, I want all the help I can get to be seen. :D

After deer season when my attention turns to coyotes and turkeys all bets are off. Lol

Only my opinion but I think that, for big game hunting, camo, scent lock, UV killers, etc are just gimmicks being used to sucker us out of our money.

Hunting from a shoothouse I just wear my street clothes with a blaze orange cap. When hunting a climber or ladder stand I wear my 3-D camo shaggy suit. I take the blaze orange cap off and put on my matching shaggy head cover when I get up in the tree. As long as I'm not sillouetted against the sky a deer just doesn't seem to pay any attention to me. Heck, I wear camo even when I'm not hunting. I just like it.

I use to but as it wears out I'm not replacing it.  I like wool and much of my stuff is old military wool clothing.  I do like the camo Wrangler jeans for warmer weather.  The bugs can't bite through them.

This old Woolrich Jacket has been out hundreds of times in the last 20+ years.  The hat is a Stormy Kromer.

I like to be camouflaged from the general public while hunting and it is definitely effective for that.

I dont believe in camo unless for militry use.I wear earth tone colors .As far as sent block and all that .Thats just commercialism at its best .Used to older times men hunted in coverals smoking half the time and did plenty well for themselves .Yea go put on camo then cover it half up with Blaze orange GO FIGURE .Commercialism has got us all folks thinking we need this or that to be succesful.  I just found this discussion and thought that I would add to it.

For me, it depends on the type of hunting that I will be doing.

Rifle deer, pig, Upland game, and jump shooting waterfowl are in my "street clothes", usually blue jeans/cargo pants and some form of shirt and jacket.  I will add chaps and vest if appropriate.

Now If I am hunting Turkeys, Archery Deer/antelope, Calling Duck and goose or varmint calling, I will generally use camo.  As one of the earlier posters said, my camo is more for differentiating my hunting clothes from my regular clothes.

Good points here yall. I agree. I don't see the point in camo with blaze orange all over it. Now for archery hunting here we don't have to wear blaze, so maybe. And yea a must when hunting the wiley coyote and turkey. Thanks!

for deer carhatt bibs and a blaze jacket and beanie,  then full camo basically for anything else,  unless its really cold late night yote hunt, then I will take my carhatt bibs and coat.

You're right about the earth tones, camo is mostly a marketing scam, but try to find suitable clothes without camo!  I do usually use camo (again, it's hard to find good hunting clothes that aren't camo), but put a orange vest over it.  I lucked out this weekend:  I was in a LL Bean outlet store and fouond a great wool hunting coat in green for only $55.00.  It had been $159 and was marked down to $109 when I first saw it on Thursday.  I stopped in on Sat. and they had a 50% sale on hunting clothes.  Yipee, I finally found something that I could afford at Bean's!  They also had a pair of charcoal colored heavy wool pants marked down from $69 to $49 to $24.50.  When my old German wool pants wear out I'll have a replacement pair.

As far as scent blocking clothes you're right again.  The oldtimers smoked while hunting and the camps were also smokey.  Not to mention the human smell after a few days without a bath.  Must be that the deer weren't as sophisticated back then!  Heck they would fall dead after being hit with a .30-30.  Now you would think that , they were wearing body armor unless you used a wondermagnum!

I've seen my step-dad pee off the back of his stand then kill a deer 30 minutes later.  I know a couple old timers that will smoke a pack of cigarettes on a morning stand, and still kill deer every year.

I usually wear camo but I'm not sure why - wait, I know why.  I was dumb enough to buy it.  Seriously, it is made for hunting so it is usually better in some way.  Based on a few experiences, the best may be ASAT or similar - not a leaf pattern but a very radical break-up.

Years ago I bought a pair of slip-on overshoes with fuzzy bottoms since I do a lot of still hunting and walking around.  I have definitely jumped more deer and gotten close to more animals, and it's not surprising.  Even a human can tell it cuts your walking noise about in half.  This is in the east, where the carpet is dried leaves.  They are a lot more slippery, so may not be good for hillsides or rocky county.

I prefer full camo although it isn't legal here during the General Season. I prefer it because I  don't want to be seen by others.
I haven't been able to talk to a Deer and get first hand info what color they can or can't see.  ;) Camo breaks up the shape as well and Deer can see "shape"!!
If they are truly color blind I prersume they can see different shades of grey or black. A hat, jacket and pants of the same color has got to be distinct in comparsion of the woods around it.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

First off... I agree with all of the above.  However, I look at it like this.... my camo clothes are my hunting clothes.  I also like the 3D patterns of today's camo and the digital stuff.  I also own 2 Yamaha ATVs in camo.

The amount of blaze orange required for gun season in Ga. is such that camo doesn't matter.  From the waist up I'm orange anyway.  I usually wear jeans, esp. when it's cold.  If it's real cold I put on my thermal coveralls which are black.

The only time I concern myself with camo is turkey, but I know folks have duck hunted for years with earth tones, so it probably doesn't matter much there either.

I WOULD like one of those neat ghillie suits though.  I might want to sneak up on someone someday ;)

If you are still and quite, you are camoflauged to a deer.  They are color blind, but quick to detect movements.
