How have you changed your banking habits?
« on: March 19, 2011, 10:32:00 PM »
Now that there are so many new federal restrictions on how banks can make their money, have you changed your banking habits to compensate?

We had banked with a regional bank for over twenty years, and we had direct deposit into checking accounts for our paychecks. Then some fees changed. Both my wife and I simultaneously and independently closed our accounts and switched to credit unions with more favorable terms. In effect, we don't have conventional bank accounts any more.

These changes are related to Dodd-Frank, mostly.

Now there are likely to be fee changes on debit cards, with maintenance fees and caps on transactions.

We have banked at the same regional back for over thirty years. We were at the same bank as it changed hands three or four times before that. There have been no fees added to our no fee checking account . We declined their debit card so I have no idea about it.

I will NOT pay fees of any kind to a bank for using MY money.  If and when they try to start such things, they will cease to receive my business.  As far as investing goes, banks are the absolute worst place in the world.  With the market being what it is today, actual commodities seem to be the only safe bet.

We've got three credit unions and one bank and I think we're about to eliminate the bank unless they can offer better CD rates.

My bank has giving me free checks, free increased overdraft protection (although I've never needed it), free online, and a free safe deposit box over the last year or so. Plus they have started paying me monthly interest on any checking accounts I have.
