CVA abd blackhorn 209
« on: March 23, 2011, 02:48:29 PM »
My question to CVA--
I have a 6 year old optima 50 cal and will be switching to Blackhorn 209.
I have heard that the current beech plug may not be the best for 209.
Do I have to get a different type of breech plug or do some sort of modification to my existing plug?

Their answer

We are still testing the Blackhorn 209, but testing so far indicates we may have to modify or redesign portions of our rifles.  Before we do we also want to see how these changes will affect the performance with other powder, bullet and 209 combinations.  It may turn out that making these changes will have no impact with other products used in our rifles.  Then it again it could have negative impact and we may not feel making those changes is worthwhile for the majority of our shooters.

We haven't stop evaluating Blackhorn 209.  At this time though we can neither recommend nor not recommend Blackhorn 209.

Sounds like they will not make any commitments at this time

I'll continue to use the #32 drill and acetylene torch cleaners for now.
BTY I got my #32 drill from ENCO for a couple of dollars but shipping was $8

.032 - .035" flash hole along with a much larger 5/32" flash hole make for excellent improvements with shooting BH209.

Western Powders made a new plug design " Quick release breech plug" for CVA and they "CVA" Took it to Spain for the engineers. The new BH209 plug will be out in mid to late June and sold as an accessory for those using BH209.
