Any new Colts out there?
« on: April 05, 2011, 07:49:52 AM »
As I posted a while back I am thinking of getting a new SA in .45. My dilemma has been choosing between USFA or a Colt. Supposably the new Colts in the last year or two are more reliable QA wise. John Taffin mentioned about the new Colts a while back and he said he would do a full review soon, never heard more. Checking with three local dealers, they all say they cannot get any SAs from Colt at this time and do not know when they will be able too. That may explain why there have been no recent reviews by Taffin or anyone else. Anyone hear know anything more on the status of new Colts?

I'm afraid I can't give you any input into the new Colts, but I have owned two and both were very good shooters.  The first was a nickeled 44 spl with the slickest action and most perfect timing I have every handled.  AND it was also a VERY good shooter.  This last is a 2nd gen Colt .45 'beater' that I knew needed to be rebuilt when I bought it.  But I knew that going in and while I had to correct a couple of cosmetic and timing issues, I got it at an appropriate price to reflect that.  However it also is a good shooter when loaded with .454 bullets.  The cylinder throats are the old .455 ones but it shoots good just the same.  I've heard that Colt has corrected that problem now but I've not had anyone give any feedback on that yet.  I've also heard that they have gone back to the 20 tpi barrel threads.  I've been pleased with my Colts, but mine have also been bought used and checked carefully first.  I can't help you with new ones.
You know what a USFA is going in (or a STI Texican) but since you have not bought one of those yet, it sounds like you would rather have a Colt IF it will preform well.  I hope you can get some feedback here on the newest Colt's hitting the market and get the info you need.  If you get a good one, you will not regret the decision to own a Colt.  44 Man

I had a 44 spl. and a 45 Colt both 5.5 bbl. The action on both was not so good. Gritty , lots of take up and over travel . It felt as if the triggers had side play as they were pulled . Pulling the hammer back was not what one expects with a nice Colt $ 1300.00 dollar gun either . Just my opinion on the two I had.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Colts are scarce right now.  I have a pair in .45 Colt, engraved, with one piece ivory stocks.  I'm shopping for a pair in .44-40 to use as regular shooters.  So far, I haven't found what I'm looking for.

The pair of .45 Colts I have have the best action on them of any single action revolvers I've ever felt.  They are set to within ounces of the same pull.

The first one is at my engravers right now getting the cylinder and barrel engraved to match the backstrap.  I'm due to drop the second one off June first with him, to make them a matched pair again.

I'm not sure of the availability of Colt SAAs in other areas, but the last time I was to a shop I visit about every other month, they had one in .44 Special, I think it was marked $1300.
The newer 3rd gen. Colts I've seen are pretty well made. The fit & finish is very good, & the timing is right on. If I had the money & wanted one, I'd buy one, especially now that the price difference between the Colt & USFA has narrowed considerably. The USFAs are great guns by themselves though, but if you really want a Colt, the price difference isn't enough to go for the USFA over the Colt.

THERE ARE LOTSA NEW COLT SAA SIXGUNS OUT THERE !!! The shop I frequent must have had twenty in the show case when I was there a couple of days ago in lots of interesting calibers and finishes. He mentioned he is currently ordering lots more this week [ I've seen him get an order from COLT'S that included SAA sixguns in every caliber in their catalog, every barrel length they have available, and six guns in an uncataloged caliber in all three barrel lengths, ALL in one shipping box....I about had a case of the vapors... ]
The two new ones I ordered last November have not arrived yet and I was hoping to take then to NM with us in three weeks. Guess we'll just have to take along a dozen or so of the older ones...
And so it goes..

According to the Colt reps manning their booth at the NRA Convention in Pittsburgh 2 weeks ago, the "New" New Frontiers are scheduled to be run this month ... FWIW.
