locking lugs
« on: March 28, 2011, 07:30:56 AM »
I have searched this topic on here and looked at my barrels that I have and correct me if I am wrong about this PLEASE. I have two different locking lugs here and they both are two piece lugs but the one style will work on my G2 and the other will not. Now I am confused because the searching that I did said one piece lug and two piece lug. Here is a picture of the one that will not work and the difference is that yes it is two pieces but it has that dumbell connecting the two making it one. My other lug has the dumbell built into each side of the lug and those do work. So this picture would be considered a one piece or is there still another style lug??? Thanks..Henry

What you have in the picture is an older, 2-piece locking bolt.  The newest locking bolts have the little buttons milled into the side, thus eliminating the "dumbell".  The really old locking bolts were one-piece.  Imaging what you have there as one piece with no split in the middle. They can be cantankerous on the newer frames.

Probably the reason you might have trouble with the newer "non-dumbell" bolts is a matter of a very tight fit within the frame.  See the sticky at the top of this forum on "Fitting Contender barrels to G2 frames"  Same thing applies to almost any barrel that will not lock up, or for that matter, any barrel that will not open easily.

I do not have any trouble with the newer "non dumbell" style, it is the one pictured that is giving me problems. Now I understand that there is three different styles of lugs. I have polished that style pictured and still cannot get it to lock up good enough to cock the hammer. It will open and close no problem but will not allow me to pull the hammer back. I guess I will just have to stick to the newer style two piece lugs for my frame. Thanks..Henry

I'll bet that if you keep polishing the sides and top of the bolts, you will get them to work in your frame.  I've never had a barrel that I couldn't make work, or at least I haven't so far out of the couple of dozen barrels that I have.
