shotgun scope in front of hammer question.
« on: March 20, 2011, 09:21:50 AM »
I have asked about scopes for this purpose about 2 years ago give or take. I got a few responses, but not the name of a good suitable scope. as far as I can tell, 8" of eye relief is perfect, but to have a scope with a range of 7-10" would work the best. you have to be comfortable when shooting, and not adjusting to an unnatural head position. so what are some choices in scopes? thought about goin full scout, but want nothing to do with drilling and tapping.

Are you wanting a fixed or variable scope?
It'll be easier for someone to make a recommendation if they know exactly what you want.

I would like to know as well, either fixed or variable.  If you look on Midwayusa, they typically list the eye relief, but its rarely over 5 inches unless its a pistol or scout scope.

fixed is fine, but I have checked midway, and I havent seen anything with proper eye relief for this type of mounting. burris makes a scout with 8.5", but it aint the perfect relief.

I dont know if this will be helpful or not, and most of us do want the 'full field of view' from our optics even though we are mostly not using the outer edge of the glass, but I have sacrificed a bit of that FoV to get some eye relief and aim with the crosshairs anyway. The big bells do increase the light gathering so the clarity and brightness is still there, if it was good glass to begin with, and you can gain some valuable adjustment.
I dont want to go to that very forward 'scout' position either, unless I was using a mount to replace a mil sight without modifying the rifle other than installing the mount in place of the sight assembly.
I know Ive seen pics here of some scopes forward of the hammer; someone should be coming in with specifics soon.

the one i've used is the 2.5x20mm Simmons 8 Point Shotgun scope. It has I believe 5 " eye relief. I used the Weaver 82 base with an extra slot cut for the rear ring(easy job). Low weaver style rings puts the rear objective just forward of the hammer...hope this helps

don't you have to strech yer neck forward to be able to see thru that scope?
