The National Park Service closed to vehicles Friday one of the most popular spots on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in an effort to protect rare shorebirds that might try to nest in the area. The closure is temporary but could last for months."

Rare birds deserve a nice spring break also. :o :-X

The Park Service will like the way it keeps people out of their park they will make it perminate.  It's not the people's park, just ask any Parkie.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Umm-Hmm !  I've noted other parks giving off the same implications.

I have had numerious doscussions with Park Service Employees.  In their openion visitors to the park need to be limited to just a small handful at a time.  Then those should be in a bus nor handled in such a manner they can leave no imprint what so ever on the park.  Look at Denali Park.  No one is allowed to drive into the park, you have to ride a bus, and the bus only stops at approved visitors centers.  This way the visitors are controlled and then they are removed back to the Visitors center.  anyone wanting to hike the park must apply for and be granted a permit.  Then all kinds of restrictions are placed on you.

It's OK for the Bears to poop in the woods, and for the Wolves to poop in the woods.  But if you are a visitor hiking in the Park, you may not poop in the woods.  If you do you have to place it in a plastic bag and remove it from the park as you leave.

Brings up the old question- " Does a park visitor poop in the woods?" :)

Pretty typical tactic, remove the land from the tax rolls, turn it into "Public Land" with Taxpayer dollars, then fence the Public out of it.

I used to drive my vehicle behind the dune line at Hatteras, go surfing all day, and drive out again in the late afternoon.  Same for beaches like New Smyrna and Daytona in FL.

A walker with a good dog could keep those birds stirred up for two weeks and off the beach so they don't nest.   ;)

Did the same at Cape Henlopen in Delaware. I think the ban there is seasonal. Only when the birds are nesting. Is your area seasonal or permanent?

Its probably just the park service trying to justify themselves during a budget crunch. "Protecting Rare Wildlife", is code for we need to be important to survive. I am sure the birds can be protected at the state level, as it should.  Duplication of agency duties at its best.

They also do it on beaches where sea turtles lay their eggs.

I live only a few miles from the cape.  Yes it will be closed for nesting, but there are miles of open beach still open along Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.  If you like surf fishing, don't give up.

Come now and book a tuna trip for large bluefins.  Almost guaranteed to catch several large fish if the weather permits.  Not many fish in the surf now.  Mahi and yellowfin will show up in the gulf stream next month, which along with May, are my favorite months to fish offshore.

Oh yeh; the beaches.  Pismo Beach didn't have any seashells, so I load my family up and we drive up the coast towards Morro Bay.  Stop at a lonely stretch of road and no traffic.  Before we could step off the roadside, A Ranger pulls up.  I had to explain why we were there, then he said "since we were from Oklahoma that I could take the 3 kids down on the shore and let each one fill a tennis shoe with seashells......
