Your right, Ed, the details can be seen better before it's covered with black gloss. That's one fine looking 6-pounder; great work!
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

That is a great looking barrel. Kind of makes me wish I didn't already have a similar barrel.

Ed,

I have the conversions for this barrel to golf ball diameter converted from the William Green drawing.  The over all barrel length is  27.7 inches, diameter at base ring 5.26 inches.  Weight will be a little under 150 lbs

Now Doug I would BUY one that shoots Golf Balls. Ed what would a barrel cost if it were built like Doug is talking about. I am thinking of selling my Herns Iron works barrel that has NEVER been fired in order to have something like what you have described here to shoot GB. I have to keep the carriage for the other barrel.

My problem was build in GB , stay within the limits of my machines . My lathe is 12 x 53  , but my mill is 6 x 21 . I have to get the barrel and the indexing fixture on the table .

I built these with a powder chamber to keep down the diameter to workable size . Every one I make teaches me something . Ed

Ed,

I'll crunch the  Numbers for the 8 inch siege howitzer and send them off.  I think they maybe more workable for your equipment for GB.

The 1841,  8 inch Siege gun in golf ball dimensions would be about 13 inches long and and 4 inches in diameter...I want one!

now i guess in other areas of the country you have lots of open land, to shoot golf ball cannons, in va. we have to many trees.  i refuse to build  a golf ball cannon. mortars are ok but cannons. i have seen a golf ball cannon send the golf ball back 100 yards off of a tree just as fast as we sent it down there with a cannon. now i would buil myself a undersized or way over sized then a golf ball and make a mold for lead round balls or some other metal that would not bounce as bad as golfballs.

well to get off of that.   that is a great looking gun.

Ed,  I like the 1861 Siege Howitzer so much that I just ordered one and I don't even know how much they are going for!  How smart is that?  Please check your website's customer information form.

Out here in the wide open spaces, we would have to walk about three miles across the prairie to find a tree to bounce one off!!  Gary would probably want to try it though.  The guy is absolutely fearless.  One time he shot one at a steel plate about 50 yards distant and it rebounded very quickly, missed him by inches on the right, rebounded again off one of my Suburban's tires, 20 feet behind us, missed him again by inches on the left, then flew out to 80 or 90 yards downrange!

I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

I've had 7 lb 4.5" mortar rounds bounce from tree to tree to tree at 100yds+ at the end of the range before (but no one was watching)!

There is always the  Group buy steel balls and maybe we can get some one to build  a golf ball mould in steel so we can cast  zinc.

I love my new 1841 barrel from HMR.  I choose 1" bore as I already had a mold for making cannon ball sinkers (just leave out the brass ring).  The three oz. sinker is 0.98 dia. and after polishing the lead a little after molding it fits great.
If interested in molds - http://www.barlowstackle.com/Do-It-Cannon-Ball-Sinker-Molds-P303.aspx .
