Help me decide, 308 survivor or handigrip
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:00:58 PM »
So I have read and read on the H&R single shots, spent the last 3 hours reading LOL, and am taking the plunge. I am trying to decide between the Handigrip and the Survivor in 308. I like the heavy barrel of the 308 survivor and can't get a clear answer online if the handigrip is heavy or tapered. My future plans would be to add barrels in 223, 45LC, 20ga and (as my other thread is going maybe 7.62X54R). From there who knows, maybe add some interesting ones.

So any pros/cons for one over the other Handigrip VS Survivor. Both use the SB2 reciever as I undesrtand it so no issues getting barrels fitted. On Budsgunshop price difference is roughly $20.

Appreciate any and all advice.

First off, listen to the pros on here before you listen to me! ;)  One thing I would consider is the survivor has been around for quite awhile.  I would think, if you were patient and looked around at all the shops, you might find some old stock that might keep some $$$ in your pocket.

The 243, 308 and 45-70 Handi-grips all have standard 22" barrels, the Survivor is the only bull barreled 308 H&R.  All H&R stocks fit all of their single shots, so you can always swap stocks to get what you want. ;)

The survivor stock I did not like. Silly for a heavy barrel. The survivor would be good for sights or a shotgun not a heavy barrel /scope combo. If it were me I would try the other one.

I have the Survivor stock and forend - not what I'd shoot if I was looking for 'comfort,' but for a truck gun or SHTF-Handi  I think the Survivor stock and storearm are good ideas!

But only thing that perplexes about the "Survivor" Handi's is that HEAVY barrel the .223 and .308 have.  Why not offer them instead in std contours?

The Handi-Grip set is a MUCH MORE comfortable way to go.  But both sets/stock styles have their places!

I was going to ask the same question LOL. I'm going to take the plunge here soon too. I dont really care for the storage compartments if it interferes with comfort but i am a pack rat so it might come in handi ;D But as far as the HandiGrip goes is it a big weight difference between the two? Is the HandiGrip another piece of hallow plastic (but with cheek rest and slightly better grip)? I would want to get a wood thumb hole stock but cant seem to find one for lefties  :'( I guess I would have to buy the HandiGrip and fill in the stock.

all i can say is you will not be disappointed with the handi grip, there is no replacement for a secure grip when trying to shoot tight groups

For hunting, I don't like bull barrels on synthetic stocks.  They just don't carry well.  They're top heavy and want to sling muzzle down, plus you're lugging that extra weight around all day.  I had a Handi .17HMR bull barrel that was a tack driver,  but got rid of it for that reason.  The other reasons were the price of ammo and splitting cases.  Patty's got a standard Sportster.22WMR on a very pretty pallet wood stock that is a sweetheart.   I brought it in the door and she said "That's a Patty rifle".    If I'm well behaved I get to use it once in a while. ::)

I've got a new model, standard contour, .223 on the new synthetic checkered stock and I love it  I'd like that stock on most of mine.
