leverevolution in 32 win special
« on: March 27, 2011, 02:30:50 PM »
I buddy of mine wants to reload some of the Hornady Leverevolution bullets and was looking for a new powder.  Anybody reload these things in 150gr for the 32?  I was going to suggest using the new powder to go along with it but can't find any reloadind data for the 32 and the leverevolution...

There are only two bullet weights available as reloading components, 170gr from Speer and Hornady and the 165gr FTX gummy tips from Hornady also.  The same two weights, 165gr & 170gr are available as factory loads.
Only way to get even close to 150gr is to cast your own and then you'll need a custom mold made up.  The .32
Winchester Special was offered in the Win Model 1894 in 1902.  It was initially offered with a 165gr bullet that was also used in the .32-40.  Using that .32-40 bullet, it was quite the deer slayer.  Ruined a lot of meat also and
the old timers complained to Winchester so loudly that Winchester offered a 165gr full patch bullet.  In the 20's, the bullet weight was increased to 170gr and has been that weight ever since until the introduction of the Hornady 165gr FTX gummie tip in .32 Special.  The Hornady Leverevolution power might be a good powder to try along with their 165gr FTX bullet.  Use 30-30 load data knowing your maximum charge will be about 3 to 4 grains heavier than the 30-30 maximum load.  I have four .32 Winchester Specials and have sent quite a few rounds down range and at deer.  All of the deer taken by me with the .32 Special have all been one shot kills.

Glad to be of help to you.  Been loading both cast and jacketed bullets in the .32 Win Special for 37 years now. If
you ever need help sorting things out for the .32 Special, just give me a hollar!

Hey Buckskin, You may possibly want to call Hodgdon and see if they would even suggest this propellant with the 32 Special. From what I gathered in loading it for the 30-30 it is very caliber specific. Where it works it works great. I am getting 2300+ fps with a 170 grain Sierra FN with a max charge of LeverEvolution and accuracy with my 22" H&R Topper was fantastic.

You will notice that the only testing was done with just four calibers it I remember correctly
