Encore in 7mm-08??
« on: January 04, 2004, 03:28:18 AM »
:-D I have been tossing the idea around on which calibur I should buy in my(soon to be) new encore.I have looked at the gun and have heard so much good about it that i'm nearly sold now.I want to use this gun to hunt deer with, but mostly for my son who will be 12 next season and would like to hunt.It seems like it would be a good gun for a beginner.
I was told by the gun dealer that the 7mm-08 calibur is supposed to be the perfect calibur for deer. Before I take the leap I would love to hear from those fellas that know more about this gun and cal. than me.Your feedbacks will be appreciated.Thanx :D PARR

I think the "perfect deer cartridge" is a subjective thing.  It really depends on a lot of things, and that is why there is no "perfect" one.  Where Im from the .30-30 has been king for decades.  But out west on the plains a .30-30 wont get you much when your shooting at 150+ yards.  Some say its the 30-06.  Some the .300 Win Mag.  Ive heard good things about the 7mm-08.  What you really need to do is determine a few things.  First is distance:  Will that round kill effectively in your set Max range?  Are you looking to drop an animal, or can you afford to trck (here in the North a straight drop kill is best because of the odd chance the deer might run into another hunter, since pressure is high here.)  Is ammo readily available (in your case there should be no problem.)  And finaly, can you live with any shortcomings the round you choose might have.  A good addage that seems to always be true is this "shoot the biggest you can handle."  If you can shoot a .300 Win Mag and smile, then go for it.  If you can only take a .243 fine.  Just know what each cartridge is capable of.  Im sure this probably doesnt help you much, but its good food for thought.

I had own one for many years. When you had to make your own cases -(guess that gives away the time frame.) I loved it. It Will take down most game - deer - elk - and the such. But as with any cartridge - SHOT PLACEMENT. I never lost and animal and all - except one - went down with the first shot. As was stated - make sure the ammo is available to you - nothing worse than having a weapon you can not get ammo for.
Reason I got rid of it as with most of my hunting weapons - quit hunting - sigh!!!
Don't cry because its over - Smile because it happened!

IMHO, the 7mm-08 could well be the perfect gun for Pa. deer hunting. It will serve your son very well, much better than a .243, etc.

I have a 7mm-08 Encore I bought April 2002, and I love the gun and cartridge. When I bought it, the gunshop owner tried talking me out of it. He said I at least needed a 300 WM. I am military and will not be living in MT all my life, so I wanted some thing that wouldn't be over kill back in the south. I shot a muley doe with it this year, and she made it 10 yards before expiring. Buy the 7mm-08, and don't look back!

The 7m-08 is definitely one of the calibers that is rising quickly to popularity.  Accurate, modest recoil and it can get the job done.  We have 2 of em and they are a joy to shoot.

The 7-08 is a great cartridge.  I have shot it in factory rounds, handloads, and even in the 7-08 ackley improved.  I do not find that its recoil is significantly greater than the .243 or the .260.  Its range of available bullet weights and designs are second only to the 30 caliber.  No caliber can be considered perfect for any and all conditions, however I would say the 7-08 will fit a very broad range of of hunting situations and hunters.  You should be very satisfied.

Take Care,

Smoky

:D Thanks for the Great!! input fella's.It seems like the 7mm-08 is a decent calibur.I DO realize it may not be the"perfect" calibur, but a good one for my beginner son.
This site has its share of TC Encore fans, and I'm excited about trying this rifle for my son (and me too,of course).
