Favorite loads for H&R Ultra 22-250
« on: March 22, 2011, 03:36:45 AM »
I have a new 22-250 H&R Ultra and the chart shows it is a 1 in 14 twist, I think.   I am going to reload for it so with that twist, should I try 40, 50, or 55 grainers as I think 60 will be to heavy????  Thanks guys

I'm eager to see the replies you get.  I've got the standard contour rifle, and I haven't been getting what I want out of it.  I bought it for a 300 yard plus coyote/fox rifle and I can barely hit a 55 gallon drum at that range.  I believe the ammo I have for it is 55 gr. factory loads.  The ammo is down in the gun room and I haven't gone down to check that.  I'm going to reload for it, but if that doesn't work, it's gonna be gone.  My .223 is a tack driver with junk ammo.

dis-claimer- I do not own nor have I ever fired a .22-250.

Barrel twist rate is only part of the bullet stabalization formula.  What you are really after is revolution per second of bullet rotation, the barrel twist combined with the velocity the bullet exits the barrel gives you that rotation. :o

Try your 55 grainers just be prepared for them not to shoot well except at higher velocities ;D

I  posted previously that my son and I bought our 22-250's at the same time.  Both heavy barrels.

His loves 45gr and mine only shoots 55gr.

Each gun has a mind of it's own.  You just have to zero in on that mindset.

My wife's standard contour 22" 22-250 loves the 36 grain Barnes Varmint grenades.  I have not shot these through the chrony but they are at just above starter loads with Ramshot TAC powder & CCI LR Primers.  2.35" OAL, no crimp, neck tension only.   Note this gun is properly headspaced and has a good lockup but I must FL size the brass everytime, neck sizing will not work on this one.

I have a handfull of 40, 50 and 55 grainers so I'll just try what I have and wait till I get results before I get a new batch.  1-14 twist should be better with the lighter bullets and I'll try some high speed 55 grainers.

The only 22-250 I have is a Savage Stryker M516 w/ a 14" bbl.  I found the twist at one time but for the life of me tonight I couldn't find the site that gave it to me, sorry.  What I casn tell you is 55 gr. and under that Stryker is a laser beam-55gr Rem PLHPs(factory ammo!) is a  .3" grouper.  WW 64gr. JSPs will not put 1 bullet within 15" of the last one!  After shooting 6 trying to -0- the scope I pulled the rest of 40 rds and will load them in my 223 Rem 700 VArmint rifle that will shoot them(I have some 1978 USAF Marksmanship Unit 600 yd 63gr Speer JSPs from a former competitor that shoot .75-.90 100 groups).  The Rem 55PLHPs took a fine 8pt buck for me from a box blind @ 90yds w/a double lung shot a couple yrs ago.  Bullet length, from what I recall was the big deal in twist factor.  Good luck.

pete you just convinced me that my 250 is also gone. My 223 shots great with the 60 hor sp and 64 grain pp. my 250 wont stabilize them.no need for it as i also have a 243. I think I will be hitting the gun shop today with a trade. Think I need a 30-30 to add to the collection.

Pete,

I bought my wife's 22-250 used and it came with several boxes of federal and hornady factory loads.  40 & 45 grainers as I remember, some with the plastic tips.  The gun shot these very well.  Maybe try some lighter bullets before you punt on your 22-250?  If you want I have some 40 grain bullets I can send you if you want to try them.

I guess I need to reword my topic from my 1st post here.  I have a H&R SB2 Ultra 22-250 with a 1 in 14 twist.  What are your favorite reloads for it?  It seems that H380 powder is a good one to start with.  I have a few 40, 50 and 55 grainers but need some of your favorite loads to start with.  Once I shoot a few, I'll know what to get more of.  Thanks
