FY 2011 Handi Budget Increase Denied
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:49:45 PM »
My Handi budget increase was denied. The E-7 promotion board results were released today and I was not selected. Since this was my "first-look", I am not overly disappointed. Competition was fierce and the absolute best soldiers were selected, many of which who have been waiting for several years.  I will benefit from my current experiences and have more to add to my promotion file for next year's selection board. :)

Thanks, Dinny

As you see from my signature, been there done that. My issue was the E-8 board. Looking back, I had so much time in, I made more than some of my bosses. The responsibilities and  and commitments where a little intimidating at the next level. I still wanted it bad. My last post offered was to be a trainer for a reserve unit in Alice, Texas. I was not a Handiholic then. If I was I would have went. I think that is where they make them video games on hunting. I refused and was told to retire. Life goes on. Keep pluggen, It will happen. In my program, education was the key, a Masters degree for E-8.

Dinny, I've been there too.  I made E-3 very early on a special program which put me in line later for E-4 and E-5 and I made E-6 late in my sixth year.  My ex-wife wanted out, so I declined it and got out after 7.  BIG MISTAKE.  I should have sent her packing and stayed in.

You'll make it next time around, I'm sure.  I know you've got to have superior performance reports, and we know you're no dummy.

I remember well seeing 20 year E-3's retire!  30 year E-5's!
I gave the USAF a six year first term enlistment, and for my sin, I put on E-3 two weeks before I graduated basic.  Gave me the same rank as the assistant T.I.  THAT was interesting!  Also ended up putting on E-5 under three years, which for the time in the AF, was unheard of.  Made me a Minuteman missile maintenance team chief, and my assistant was an E-4 with 14 years in. It helped a bunch that he was an outstanding troop, and covered my butt more than once while I learned the ropes of management!
I heard that he retired with 32 years as an E-9.
Jimmy Carter, that spineless slimeball, made my mind up that I'd had enough.  Should've stuck it out, but my last three COLA's went into my BAQ, and I was living on post with my family, so my raises went onto the LES on one column, and out in another.  Finances were stretched just a mite!  Declined the E-6 tests/board, and split the program.  Went into the National Guard the day after my ETS, and gave them another 11 years, but every time I was up for E-6, I had a PCS on my civilian AF job, and ended up being one of those 17 year E-5's.
My son in law was an E-6 with a primary MOS as a combat medic.  Went to school, got his degree, went to OTS, and is now an O-3 nurse.  He also, was having trouble making it to E-7 and sideslipped the enlisted promotion boggle and went the officer route.  Something to consider.........
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Go Dog Go!

Similar story here.  E-5 at 2 point 5, and out the door at 4 while they were begging me to take Push Button E-6 and a signing bonus.  The service taught me the concept of the "Glass Ceiling", where you bust your a$$ to advance and then your head takes one on the noggin when you are not allowed to proceed until you have "Time in Grade".  Sheesh...there were too many Retired In Place e-6, and e-7's.  Many were a waste of skin AND air.  I did my job and two of theirs.  I made their lives real easy.  I was MOTIVATED.  It didn't matter that Better, Faster, Cheaper was pushing them 20 YEARS before it became a "fundamental" concept of gooberment business.  Still, I met some fine hard working E-7's, one of whom save my inopportune tail from a watery grave.  A freak accident that could have gone badly for me at the time.

Fortunately, I worked with and for some superb people in the Navy.  A Turkish Navy Captain, (first in his class from Annapolis and the Naval War College) an Italian Navy Captain, (an Attorney named Stevens, Italian mother, British father and educated in the United Kingdom.) A British Brigadier General, (Deputy Commander, British Forces, Malta)  A U.S. Vice admiral (Commander U.S Sixth Fleet) and many others.  It seemed to me the best officers were the Mustangs that came up through the ranks.  The above mentioned senior officers were the exception.  They were all great people to work with and be around.  I worked with a Marine Jar Head Captain college boy who was a big pain in the butt for a little bit till our Lieutenant Commander Mustang Boss straightened him out.  He had the idea enlisted folks were there to serve him.......yeah....sure.  We had the same jobs, and I did mine better than he did his.

Thanks everyone for the kinds words of encouragement and gratitude. I plan to make the Army my career and with 10 years in, I have plenty of time to make rank and retire with a great benefits package. I'll keep plugging along and it's only a matter of time before they realize the mistake they made (this year) and promptly promote me.

Thanks, Dinny

My son is going in as an E-3 August 1st.

Thanks for your service.

Cheers mate.

Thanks For all you have done , and what you will do . hang in there , just keep adding to your service jacket and stand out from the other 6's for next years selection . You will do  it !

Jist be careful, as there are some MOS' that require a spine removal and lobotomy at the E-7 grade!!!
Speaking of Mustangs...my own experience mirrors those mentioned.  First one I ran into was a spanking new Second Lieutenant, who had 20 years in!
He made Chief (E-9) at 16 years, right after he finished his Masters, then applied to OTS, and had just had his new bars installed, and assumed our student squadron at Chanute when I met him.
I'd just graduated school, but the first son hadn't emerged yet, the wife couldn't travel, and I got my orders amended so I didn't have to PCS till after he was born.  Left me with nothing to do, and the Exec handed me a set of hearing and toe protectors and pointed me to the lawnmower, till I pointed to the fella in the orderly room doing the "hunt and peck" on the typewriter....I mentioned I could type 85 words a minute, and I was hired!  Anyhow, I got to know the Old Man pretty well.  When I finally cleared CBPO, and was headed to Montana, the Old Man was in the hallway, had a Lt. Col. backed into a corner and was poking him in the chest telling him how things were gonna happen.  He walked back to the squadron with me, and I mentioned "Sir, you might consider that you can't do that now, you ain't a Chief no more".........
