Suggestions on how to make a quick connect forend screw?
« on: March 26, 2011, 02:22:05 PM »
Pain in the butt to have to bring a Phillips screw driver to change barrels at the range or the field to remove the single forend screw. Has anyone made an adapter to it so you can just hand tight manually?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It was not easy to navigate. The amount of info is encyclopaedic.

So just to confirm--this screw will work in place of the stock Phillips head one?

That's one of em, any knob with long enough ¼"-20 thread will work, Ace and True Value have some in their nuts and bolts section that will work too.

I'm in the process of making a couple, by cutting off a 1/4 bolt, then drilling and tapping inside it for a sling swivel.  The swivel screw will be loc tited in, and like the Rossi, will provide not only sling attachment but fore end release as well.

how do you keep those swivel studs or knobs from hitting your hand when you shoot?
seems like you would have to keep reminding yourself that it's there.

LOL, I did put swivel studs on my 20gauge but I haven't shot it. in fact, I was thinking about either moving it to the very end so it points toward the muzzle, or, getting one of those that clamp to the barrel.  that thing scares me where it's at.

The older H&Rs had a slotted screw,  If I remember right, it was wide enough to accept a nickel or quarter, and dished out so a coin could be used to loosen or tighten it.  Could one replicate this with a Dremmel tool on the existing screw?  I don't have one anymore or I would give it a try....

Seems to me that would be the better solution. I don't carry change much anymore, but the back of the blade of a pocket knife is always handy.

Went to my local hardware store and found different assortments of 1/4-20 thumb screws. Bought these for about a nickel each. The only ones that secure the forend grip really tight are the ones that match the original screws, circled in red. The other ones don't insert real tight so I returned them and bought a handy Phillips miniscrewdriver that I attached to my keychain so I guess I'm stuck with having to screw it on or off during barrel changes.

Good news is, I don't have to go to HR1871.com to buy the original screw which probably costs an arm and a leg. Instead, I have 10 spare screws now for about 50 cents! So even if I strip the cross, just throw it away and replace.

All of the specs on stock bolts and screws can be found in the FAQs,  if you spend some time reading you'll take advantage of the years of good info that have been accumulated there, you're not the first to go down the path you're on, it's a well worn path.  ;)

goto your local salvage yard and get the roofrack crossbrace screws from an explorer or chrysler minivan (mid 90's or so). They are 1/4-20 and large enough to grasp easily.
