Still having trouble with 38/55 Target ejection.
« on: March 29, 2011, 08:51:13 AM »
I lapped the chamber with JB on an empty brass cartridge. Oiled the ejecter. Cleaned everything so it is dry and it still won't move the case from the chamber. I even used unfired empties and loaded shell. I have to use a rod to eject the brass. And I have to use a good bit of force to do it. HELP !!!!!!

It seems to me, 2/3 the problems with Handis are the ejector.  That is why all mine are extractor.  Ejectors should have been built as Huntsmans with a rod under the barrel.  They will work perfectly for months and fail when you need a second shot.  I simply don't trust them.

See the ejector tune info in the FAQs, that works for most everyone that prefers ejectors. I like to use a patched bore mop on a short section of cleaning rod under power to polish chambers.  The alternative is to convert it to a factory style extractor which requires machining the underlug to accept the extractor cam, then the original ejector can be modified and used with a short spring between the cam and it to account for the difference in length, then it ejects if it sticks, or just extracts  only due to the spring, it pushes the round out about twice as far as a factory extractor, kinda the best features of both.

Will try the mop. I'm not handi enough to do the conversion. I may have to send it back for an extractor.

H&R won't do the conversion, but there are members here that can do it for ya.  ;)

Just a thought.....Have you taken a real good look at the very ends of your fired cases ???? Might want to use a magnifier...Could it be that maybe your cases are running a little LONG ???? When the case fires the bullet is pressing the ends of the cases into the end of the chamber and causing them to be pressed together, causing a hard ejection...
Maybe if you were to TRIM a couple cases a little too short....shoot em and see if they stick the same way..       Just an idea.   PJ

Yes, there are two different lengths of 38-55 brass, the long 'original length' intended for original rifles of yore (which is too long for mine) and the shorter, which most currently available is.
There are also variations in the neck thickness, which the thicker WW in a tight chamber, will do exactly what you are experiencing. I have to neck turn just the area of the neck to bullet base depth a few thou' to get good ejection. You can experiment on a problem case by hand filing around the neck of a 'sticky' fired case and retrying it until it chambers loaded and ejects and ejects when fired. That identifies the culprit. If that is what is happening, you need the thinner necked Starline, or rework yours.
So, 1st make sure the length of brass is right
2nd, make sure the case neck has a couple of thou' clearance
