What is this Leupold or Premier reticle called?
« on: March 29, 2011, 10:37:48 AM »
Vari-X III 6.5-20 1" with Premier Reticle sticker. Target turrets, but no SF. A suffix. Very fine ring marks. Any idea on value?

Reticle is similar to a Mil dot but finer. 4 dots on each of the 4 axis. No dot in center. Duplex seems heavier than normal.

Looks like a std. mil-dot to me (4 dots--5 mil. units), although it's not easy to see from the pic.

Better pic. I have 2 Mil Dots, Simmons and Super Sniper. They are much more coarse in size.

I wonder if they didn't use the mil-std. .2 mil dot, or .25 (usually Marine Corps oblong dot). Sightron uses .22 mil-dots. The only other explanation is that it could be a FFP reticle at lower power. Call 'em and ask them what the dot subtensions were in their older conversions. The dot to dot has got to be mil-std. 3.6 IPHY between dots though. The super thick posts and 5 "subtension units" has mil-dot written all over it. Some companies don't even understand why the dot is set up for .2 or .25 mil., so it could easily be screwed up although Premier surely knows why. Could be a custom mil-dot reticle from them for a customer who wanted a smaller dot for accuracy purposes, and doesn't really care about reticle-rangefinding...? Looks like it could be a collector's item to me.

I am told that it was on the spare gun of a local Emergency Services (PC name for SWAT) shooter.

2 moa dots???
I'd go to the range and put up a tape at a know distance or 2.
100 yrds 100mtres.
See how much the spacings are.
Only real way to tell what you have there.

Hope it helps

Where did u get 2 MOA dots from Bruce?

Hog the only way to determine what the dot diameter is is to call the company that installed them. It's hard enough to meausre the true subtension of a stadia to stadia point that's ~1 MOA, much less the difference between .2 mil to .25 mil. The diameter of the dot itself varies a bit between manufacturers, though fortunatley most are now using .2 mil.

It is a good idea though to measure the dot to dot spacing though as i'm assuming Bruce is referring to. I also do that for almost all of my reticles. I have seen variations from factory specs.

Well if I read right it was a bit small for mildots.
millrad =3.6" @100
Therefore bit smaller =2"

Just a wild guess.

I'd still measure what you get at a known range thou
100yrds
100mtre
some small target dots of known sizes ie: label stickers helps some too if you can't see the ruler markings for the finer stuff.
Just to keep it simple.
Mostly I work out the scope I have and its not always what you thunk its supposed to be from the manufactures quoted specs either.
But then again I don't own high dollar stuff neither.
Hope it helps
