The question is do you guys think a ultra dot will stand up to a 12" 45-70 contender? If not which one do you think will stand up and of course not break the bank. The reason I would like to use the UltraDot is 1 reasonably priced,2 adjustable brightness settings,3 life time warranty.

I had a cheap Bushnell Sportsman on my Contender Super 14, .45/70, with factory muzzle tamer and it worked for me.

I have an Aimpoint 5000 on a 10" 45-70 with the muzzle brake, so far no problems holding zero after about 60 rounds of Hornady Leverevolution ammo and one mighty wallop to my neighbors forehead, plus 40 rounds of various level handloads.  Aimpoint is the way to go in red dot sights.

Well Cheif I'm beginning to lean towards that scope I hear good things about them probably pick one up and try it. Gr8ful the dot I'm replacing is an older mark3 aimpoint. Kinda broke it on my 35rem T/C popped the rheostat right out of the body, and of course I wanted to put the aimpoint on the 45-70 hence wanting a new reddot. Just don't feel like dropping 300-400 on a new one. Again Thanx

I have a 6 1/2" T/C .45-70 barrel (it was a gift). I tried a 1" Ultra Dot on it, because I have 6 others which have given good service on other guns. However, with this barrel, the battery kept popping loose, and of course the dot wouldn't work. Fix it, and it would work 20-40 rounds then pop loose again. I finally replaced it with a 2X Leupold. That same Ultra Dot works fine on another gun now.

Man I bet the recoil on that is ferocious,  mine has a muzzle break and with full power loads it still gets pretty wicked, I wonder what kind of g-forces the optics are taking.  regardless if it's gonna hang with the 45-70 it had better be tough.

The OP doesn't make it clear, but I assume that short a barrel is on a Contender, not an Encore.  So for safe shooting trapdoor levels are full power in that combo.  Even so, with trapdoor level  loads I bet its a handfull.

Yup Keith it is a contender, and ya it's a handful but real fun want to try this one on a little piggy sometime in the future.
