Reducing barrel length

Have a marlin 336 carbine in the 35 rem.I was thinking about having the barrel cut to 16 1/2 inches to make a short range(100 yards and under) brush gun.The size and the power should make a good combo.Pro's and con's to this idea. Is there any problem with crowning the micro-groove  barrel.

IMHO the really short barrels are over rated. Maybe I'm old fashoned but I started out squirrel hunting with a 28" barreled pump shotgun and don't feel burdened with a 22" barreled rifle. I don't care much for rifle barrels shorter than 20" on a centerfire. Barrels shorter than that are on the loud side.

There would be no big problems shortening the barrel(the magazine would need bobbing also) but I agree with Dave..  Short barrels don't really buy you much but a worse muzzel blast and a bit less velocity..  I generally tote a 26 inch barrel bolt rifle and have not had it hang up in the brush yet..  but if you wish it won't hurt a 35 very much and would be fairly easy to accompish..

Go for it!  I picked up a Marlin in .35 rem last year.  I was an old one with little finish left, 3/4 mag tube, and a 24" bbl.  I sent it down to my friend Ken Kelly at Mag-na-port and asked him to cut it down for me.  He shortened it to 19", ported it, put a fire sight on the front and an AO rear.  Also a scout mount (I still haven't gotten around to putting a scope on it) and a nice satin finish blue.  I absolutely love it!  It is one sweet shooting rifle.  Very little muzzle blast and wonderful handling.  Make it the way you want it, take it out and enjoy it.   44 Man
