A 10" 223 barrel was number three added to my collection, somewhere around 1991 or 92. It soon became my favorite barrel and still ranks right up there. For quite a few years I loaded 55 gr bullets over IMR 3031 which resulted in great accuracy but also horendous muzzle report, shock wave and a bright white "coon's tail" that you could see even in the noonday sun.
A few years ago someone recommended lighter bullets and IMR 4198 as a great accuracy load with much reduced fire and brimstone. I am now loading 40 gr bullets exclusively and love it. I did not have a chrono back in my 3031 days but now I do. The 23 grains of 4198 under a 40 grain V-max gave a 2834 fps 10 shot average out of my 10" Contender! Of course you must work up your own loads independent of my data.
I still keep a few of the 3031 loads around for times when I want to be the center of attention. It never fails to elicit comments at the shooting range! While I don't disagree with the guys who poo poo the 223 in a 10" barrel, I much prefer the shorter tubes for many reasons (balance, carryability, etc) and will gladly give up whatever gains they get from the 14 inch tubes. I think if you throw heavy bullets, the 14 inch has a definite edge, but with lighter bullets I'd venture to guess the performance is not that much more.
That being said, I keep thinking about trying a 10" 221 fireball. I'm thinking it is the only round that may supplant my 223 in a 10" barrel as my favorite. Or maybe I'll try an AI Hornet ..............ahhhh, so many calibers so little time!

P.S. I just snapped to the fact you said you'd be shooting factory or milsurp ammo. I still say "go for it" and you'll have fun! Just don't pay a premium price for one in case you don't like it. I think a 10" might be a little harder to sell than a longer one, but I could be wrong. I traded some tools for mine and won't be parting with it any time soon, even if I add a 221 or Hornet.
