You better get that meat off that coffee table before your wife sticks it where the sun dont shine!  ;D

Wow!! Where do you put all the meat?

I have a well stocked 28 cubic foot chest freezer.  Rule is I have to eat everything I kill.  So, when the freezer nears full, I off-load meat to family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.  Nothing goes to waste.  The Butcher's family always eats well.  I also barter meat sometimes for corn, food plot seed, reloading equipment, and construction equipment/labor on my place.

Sadly, in SC, there are people that shoot to kill for that reason only.  I have heard from the Wildlife Officers there (personal friends of mine) that they often find more than gut piles in the woods every year.  Sometimes piles of deer shot dead just for the killing.  I suppose, as it is in Texas with hogs, that killing deer, which are decimating fields, is what is done, though the practice just does not seem appropriate for a regulated resource.

Haven't got a deer this year to affect the average, but had a close encounter though.  Sitting under a small cedar, I heard something to my right and saw a small 4pt coming my way.  I figured that he'd walk about 15 or so feet in front of me if he continued on his path.  Sure enough he walked right in front of me, the stopped, and turned directly toward me.  The whole time I'm thinking, "What is this deer doing?  He has to see me.  He has to smell me."  He kept coming and I waited until he was about two steps away from my foot before I moved.  In about 1/10th of a second he crouched, jumped, turned in the air and ran 20yds before stopping, look back at me, the whole time breathing quite hard.  I'm thinking about making a large spear to carry out in the field with me.  If I keep this up, it might be quite effective.

My son took this doe from the Ranch yesterday with his Win 30-30 94ae.  105 paces.  Impressive shot from his position.  My granddaughter may have played an important roll in that shot as well.
The entrance is visable high on the shoulder.  It exited above the brisket between front legs.  It ran a half circle and collapsed.

Nice shot from that distance with open sights for a youngster!  Good pic!

Elaborate on the granddaughter's role.

6 deer were herding thru a low brushy area.   Had she not continued to urge him to shoot, he would not have attempted such a difficult shot.  1st off; he said the front sight was a blurrrr.  2nd; The deer at 105 paces was a lttle behind his left shoulder.  3rd;   it was a now or never shot.
That rifle has never seen any action.  His wife's grandfather got it new in 1985, and only shot a fence post with it and put it in his gun cabinet for 20 years, then gave it to my son for a Christmas present, and it sat for another 5 years. Now it's finally being used for what it was made to do. :D

I would say my longest shot has been around 180 yds, and average would be around 100.

longest 740 something with a 308

i would say average is around 225-250

but i would like to think with all the work i put in i am atleast a little better the just the average deer hunter, so the average that everybody else kills deer dont really matter to me when picking a rifle to hunt with. the bullet will do the job at the max range im willing to shoot is the biggest factor when i pick my rifle.

I hunt in Western PA.  The longest shot I have taken was at just under 150 yards.  Shortest was at 15 yards.  The average distance is right around 60 yards.

The shortest would be about 3 yards! :o The longest is about 225. ;D But the average most of the time where I hunt is about 100 yards, just seems to work out that way!

I hunt eastern Ohio woods not many long shots offered. Closest is about 10 ft, longest about 175 yards. Many inside 20 yards and I could count on one hand those over 100 and have fingers left over. Most probably average around 30 yards.

I live in Ohio where we can only use shotguns, however, most of the deer I have killed have been under 100 yards till this year when I killed a deer at 195 yards with my 12 gauge H&R ultra slug hunter.

My average is probably 40 yards.

This year's 2 were 85 and 280 yards. Closest shot ever was 5 ft and the longest was about 390 yards ( both with the .300 Weatherby ). Average for all deer over the last 35 years - somewhere around 90 yards.
I usually hunt pasture edges so there can be some very long shots as well as the eyeball-to-eyeball encounters. My ex-brother-in-law always measured his shots in feet and considered a 100 ft shot a long one, he stayed in the swamp, I preferred the edges.

My longest shot on a whitetail was a ranged 354 yds.  The closest right about 20 feet.  I've shot one mule deer farther yet.  Average distance over the years has to be under 100 yds.

Longest I recall was about 240 down a logging road with a .270
Longest with a smokepole was 160 in a bean field.
8 this season from 15 to 80 with bow and smokepole.
I seldom like them to get closer than 40 during gun season if a shot offered.
Out of 150 or so lifetime whitetails I'd have to say 50 yd average.

Girlfriend killed her first this year(smokepole) 20 yds. :)

Longest about 425 yds.  The shortest was much more interesting, the width of one corn row with a bow.  If arrow wouldn't have been drawn it would have been touching him.  Nice 8pt about 125".  It was perfect storm during the rut, wind was perfect, he was walking toward me and I saw him before he saw me. I stepped back one row, and just got my bow drawn as he stepped in front of me. His eyes bulged and he started to turn around to run just as I released.  Watched blood pour out of both sides of his chest as he ran his last 50 yds.  Crazy adrenaline rush...

This January antlerless season I got four at over 600 yards (measured with my Lieca 1200 rangefinder) . The longest was 681 yards and the rifle was my .338-.378 Weatherby with a custom barrel and a scope set up with range compensating dots. The closest for the January season was one at around 100 yards with a 7x57.

The other end of the spectrum,my closest shot was one foot. If I hadn't moved, the slickhead would've run me over as she barrelled out of the ditch. There was  some heat behind her and she had to go.Buckshot close up just makes a tunnel.

Buckskin - One of the four far ones required a second shot, so that's almost a miss. But to make up for that I got a doe that a group of hunters driving a field had wounded with a gut shot. I think the majority of Iowa hunters hunt in groups and drive deer, and normally shoot at them running. I hunt alone or sometimes with a friend along and only shoot at deer that are still. - DON
