Is 444 Marlin on a SB1 frame doable
« on: March 30, 2011, 09:51:33 PM »
Was wondering where everyone draws the line for the SB1 chassis.  Green Mountain has some 1" x 22" .430 blanks on sale for $30 bucks and am tempted to make a full length insert for a 12 gauge barrel.

Are you talking about using factory ammo or handloads? If you reload and keep pressure down below 40K or so it'd probably be OK but you're taking a risk for sure. You'd be alot further ahead by using an sb2 frame. (and safer).

Probably not the best idea as somewhere down the road someone else will have your gun and nothing would stop them from shooting factory 444M ammo.

Why even think about it.  If you're going to go through all that work and effort, just get a .444 Handi and be done with it with no worries.  Personally, I'd get the .45-70.

Yeah Tom, that is true, but if I could only have one, it would be the .45-70.

New 444 is over $200

Barrel blank will be under $50 machine work is free for me.  In short the insert would be anchored into the barrel and a extractor groove cut so as to create a permanent installation.  Not very complicated but time consuming cutting the blank down to a usable insert.

I already own a 45-70 Handi.

Reason I ask is that MCACE sells inserts for 12 gauge in 444 Marlin.   My concern is the bolt thrust capabilities of the sb1 frame.

I wouldn't recommend it, the 444 Marlin is basically a rimmed 30-06, same case head size and start load pressure. My 444 Marlin Superlight project is build on an SB2 frame even tho the 44mag donor barrel came on an SB1 frame.

Here's another reason to reconsider, the Contender is a stronger platform than an H&R SB1, TC doesn't offer a 444 barrel for the Contender, only some aftermarket mfrs do.
