Need help with a cap square
« on: April 06, 2011, 11:57:07 AM »
I need some help.
The cap square pictured below was made for me about 12 years ago by Cannon Limited.  I used it on my South Bend swivil gun barrel that I mounted on my white split trail carriage.
It is for a 2" trunnion and is made of 3/8" X 2" material with 5/8" round bar welded to the ends.  The flats are welded to the rounded part.
Now I need to make two more for a project I'm working on.  I want to use the same material as above but I need it for a 2 5/16" trunnion.  I am having no luck finding 3/8" wall pipe with a 2 5/16" ID.
Any Ideas on what I can do?

Try this, it's an excellent excuse to go buy a lathe and mill : http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,123779.0.html

Soot,
I've seen that, thanks.

So, let me see if I've got this right.

If you had a piece of steel tubing 2-5/16 ID and 3-1/16 OD that is 2" long, you could then cut it up and weld it (or have it welded) to more 3/8 x 2" strap iron?

Let me look in the scrap heap for something that can be turned.

Zulu,
make a pattern and have them cast.  I have a foundry that has cast all my parts from bronze a a reasonable price.  I have a variety of parts somewhere??  What size do you need and i will check it out.  I made the id of the trunion slightly undresize and finished by hand to get a good fit and the angle of the cheeks.  you do great work.
