Hand throating?
« on: April 06, 2011, 04:36:27 PM »
I just noticed 4-D is a sponsor.  I'm considering throating some rifles to make them better cast shooters.

How critical is hand throating to do.  I have a fair amount of experience with machine tools and close tolerance work.  I've got a 444 Marlin and 32-20 that have no real throat at all.  Instead they have abrupt rifling ramps that look like at least 30 degrees straight from the case mouth line in the chamber.  I'm looking to do a ball seat style, short leade, app. .050, a little, .001-.002, over the groove diameter with rifling ramps of 1-3 degrees.

Opinions?

C.E. (Ed) Harris has done quite a lot of that type of experimentation and developed criteria. I know Ive read a fair bit of it in The Fouling Shot (the publication of The Cast Bullet Assoc.). Maybe somebody else can find, or recall, where to check his data.
If you are pretty certain of what you propose to use, then it will probably be about a 5min. job with the reamer, including sips of coffee, etc.
