45 colt TCA barrel!
« on: December 23, 2003, 05:48:01 AM »
Just ordered 12" stainless TCA barrel in 45 colt from Ed's. It will be interesting to see how this barrel shoots since it does not have the choke system or the 410 chamber, just 45 colt.  300 grain cast should pack a punch!

Received my barrel. Really shows promise considering that most if not all of the factory 45 colt barrels were choked and long chambered to also use 410. This has a clean 45 colt chamber.

The barrel is stainless, 12 inch, no front sight holes to plug, just scope mounting holes, best of all it has the super 14 forend mounting. Plan on mounting a 3X burris scope on it.

Should be a thumper with 300 grain cast bullets and stout loads of lil'gun or H110.

Will be interesting to see how big the chamber is on it too.

I have two .45LC barrels, one a factory octagon and the other a custom 10" bull - neither has the .410 option.  Both have very tight chambers, tighter than any of my other .45LC handguns except for the Dan Wesson M45 - its tight chambers are the same size as those in the two Contender barrels.  I found best accuracy with the bullets seated out closer to the lands ( the throats are pretty long ).  With no crimp possible, medium speed powders like BlueDot give the best accuracy with very good velocity in the bull barrel.  With its best load I can shoot aggregates of 2.5 moa at 100 yards - that's the average of four, 5-shot groups with all flyers counted.  The barrel walls on the octagon are so thin that I am afraid to shoot any load hotter than factory levels.  At the muzzle the barrel wall thickness is just 0.040"!

Next day or so I will mic the chamber, virgin brass, and brass sized in a RCBS die. The barrel looks great mounted with my walnut 10" target bullberry fore end even though it stops about an inch short of the muzzle.

Just for your information.  Thompson Center did offer blue bull 10inch barrels without choke.   I've had my factory barrel since the early "80's".
It's a great shooter.

Just thought you'd like to know.
