.44 mag Alaska Backpacker Holster
« on: March 29, 2011, 11:04:18 AM »
Looking for a holster for my son in AK. He carries the S&W, 2.5" barrel Alaska Backpacker IV. I really like the looks of the DIAMOND D CUSTOM LEATHER, Guides Choice Leather Chest Holster http://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/Chest_Holsters.php But $155 and a couple of months wait seems excessive.

How do you guys carry the short barrel .44 Mags?

Check with Simply Rugged holsters, they are in Texas now I think, great gear and they offer a "Chesty Puller" model that looks the same

I use this for my 4" 657 mt gun  http://www.alaskasportsmanproducts.com/  I find it quite comfortable for all day carry.  The plastic strap buckle is a little tricky but I'm used to it.

I think you are on the right track with a chest holster.  Really provides quick access to the gun which is a "good thing"...especially in AK.

I currently use a cross draw holster that I attach to the chest strap on my backpack or daypack.  Secures your firearm and keeps very accessible.  Simple and quick and no extra straps running across your shoulder or around your body.

A holster without the rigging will save you some money as well.

In looking around for a cheaper solution I like the looks of the Pancake holsters with 2 position slots. There are designed to let you select an upright carry or a butt forward carry on your belt. (20 years as a FED LEO I always carried butt forward) I think one of these holsters could be attached to a 1.5" nylon strap system, over the shoulder, to give you a chest height "cross-draw" but still keep the gun flat against your chest. I think I would go with leather also. Never met a nylon holster I would want to carry everyday. Not enough ridge form.

Second on the "Simply Rugged" pancake holster.  I had one , very well made .   When I got mine they were in Alaska.  Not aware they moved.  Mine was made for a 4" Ruger Redhawk, fit was exceptional.  Priced right too.

regards, irold

I also really like the Simply Rugged Pancake holster. Very high quality and priced right. I think they are in Arizona right now.
