Enough Load for Hunting?
« on: April 16, 2011, 08:12:03 AM »
Last Wednesday I finally got my Cabelas/Investarms Hawkins rifle to shoot what I call accurately. The last 3 shots at 50 yards were in the bullseye w/ two of them touching. The load I worked up to get this was 55 grains of T-7 w/a .490 prb and 0.15 ox-yoke patch. My questions are 1) Will this load be sufficient for deer hunting out to say 80 yards ( the max distance for a shot from my treestand sight) and 2) Would accuraccy improve any by going to a 0.495 prb with a thinner patch?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Jim :)

1) Yes, not a problem. It IS all about putting it where it belongs, confident accuracy and one in the boiler room with that load will do the job just fine.

2) Hard say-in, might be the 495 with a .015 will be better. I've always improved accuracy with tighter patch/ball combos, the only thing you can do is try. You already have one load that you know works, you can always go back to that.

When I work up different combos, I always have to adjust the powder too, working from low to high in 5grn increments

Thanks Necchi for the info. I will continue to experiment and let you know how things go. I have learned alot from everyone here on the board.

Chipshot, for patched ball shooting I always seem to get better accuracy with Pyrodex than with T7.  If you're not happy with the groups you're getting you may want to give Pyrodex a try, or even better, GOEX.

Semisane,
I originally started out with pyrodex and the shots were all over the paper. Started usiing over powder wads and it helped some but still not I would call accurate. I am using T-7 in my in-line and it does well so I decided to try it in the Hawkens. Groups were better. I have tried everything from sabots, Lee real bullits, Maxis etc. I read here on one of the posts that this style gun w/ 1:48 twist usually has shallow rifling. I tried tighter patches 0.15 Ox-Yoke and as I said things really got better. Last 3 shots I made were inside a 2" bullseye at 50 yards with 2 of them touching. I would like to try BP but there is no handy source around here. Closest is over 100 miles one-way and ordering by bulk is just out of the question for now. Thanks for the help. Jim
