.260 Rem and 85 gr Sierras
« on: April 24, 2011, 07:50:58 AM »
I will soon be loading up some 85 gr Sierra HP for my .260 Rem.  I plan on working on some reduced loads for plinking along with some standard near-max loads.  Varget or IMR 3031 are my preferred powders.  Anybody out there have any loads using either of these powders and this bullet?

Thanks

Back in the day, long before anyone called it the 260, I had built a 243 necked up to 260 "6.5mm" and it was deadly on grounhogs and fox as far as you could see them using a lot of 4064 powder.  This rifle had a twist of 1 in 11.5 inches just to shoot light bullets, so I don;t know how a factory 269 will work with light bullets.

Really?  Nobody out there has ever loaded this?  My manuals only list bullet weights down to 95 grains, so I am having a hard time coming up with a safe load to start out with.  I'm all ears.  Thanks.

I don't load the .260 but I did see that the Lyman 49th Edition has data for the 85 gr. Sierra HP #1700 listed in their manual and Varget is one of the powders listed. Nothing for the IMR 3031 amongst the others.
Start load suggested @ 39.5 gr. and MAX @ 44.0 gr. with their 24" with 1:9 twist barrel.

If you are going after varmints and you can't get the 85 to shoot well try the 100 gr Sierra HP. I shoot it in my 6.5X55 Swede and it just vaporizes groundhogs.  :o Red Mist City.

By the way the Sierra manual list the suggested accuracy load for the 85 gr bullet as 42.8 grs AA-2495, 3300 fps and the hunting load as 46.6 grs Viht N150 for 3400 fps. Rifle used was a Savage 12VSS 24" barrel 8"twist Rem case Rem 9 1/2 primer and COAL 2.710

For the 100 gr HP the suggested accuracy load is 40.1 grs Varget for 3000 fps OAL 2.710 and the hunting load is 46.2 grs BigGame for 3200 fps.
