The new Ruger "Scout"- They blew it.
« on: March 29, 2011, 06:11:42 PM »

Any thoughts on the new Ruger Scout?  I think they totally blew it by putting a 16.5 inch barrel on it.  A Scout rifle is intended to be an all around rifle, not a super-stubbie butt-heavy toy.  Cooper remarked that the Win. 94 was a good rendition of a scout rifle for the 19th century.  It has a 20" barrel, is well balanced,  and actually points!   The newer rifle should have had a 20" barrel as well.  Can anyone say extreme and unnecessary muzzle blast??

All in all, I think the Savage version of the Scout is far superior.

I guess you could classify my 1998 Krag 30-40 carbine a scout rifle.   ::)

I will take it over the Ruger or the Savage any day.  8)

I see it as a "frankenrifle."  No offense if you like it, but it appears to be a hodgepodge of spare parts to me.  I think Cooper also said, "A perfect solution to a nonexistent problem."

The folks on scoutrifle.org are very interesting, and seem to fall into two groups.  The first group loves any factory production rifle that has SCOUT in its name, and seems to buy them all, with members always listing all of the others that they own.

The second group is extremely detailied in their analysis, assessing each rifle on a point by point by point basis.  Many in this second group see the stubbie 16.5 inch barrel as a major drawback.

Personally, I think Ruger should have just named it the Ruger "Jungle Carbine", because that's all it really is.

It seems as if the only reason they put the stubbie barrel on it was so that when a full magazine of ammunition is inserted, the overall weight of the rifle will stay under the exact weight limit specified by Cooper.    What they have done, though, is to throw the baby out with the bath, and created an impractical mish-mash, that is far removed from an all around rifle.

I also think that the overly long, square edged 10 round magazine is a clumbsy mess.  They should have gone with an 8 round magazine, with rounded  bottom edges, like the bottom of the Enfield Mags.

I predict that Ruger won't be selling many of these "scouts" and will discontinue them in a couple of years.

Schuetzen is quietly continuing his working on his 16" .308 Win Encore "Scout Rifle".  It has unlimited "magazine" capacity.  It will fire as fast as you can load it.  ;D

It actually used to have a side mount 2x scope that I took off and replaced the peep sight it originally wore when my dad bought it for $25.  With the scope it would shoot groups right at 1 inch all day long.  Even with the peep, I can keep it under 1.5" on a normal day.   Last time I shot it, I was with a buddy who was sighting in his 30-06 and 300 WinMag for elk season and had trouble staying under 2 inches with 3x9 scopes.  When I took out the Krag and put 5 rounds into the target with the peep (with my 62 year old eyes) that was 1.3 inches he was speech less.

That old Krag litteraly saved my life in 1966 when I shot a charging Mule deer buck.....and I didn't use the sights to aim it because he was so close.  So....I think it qualifys as a fast action scout rifle.

Length is fine, weight killed it.  A Scout has to be light.  A laminated stock isn't light.

A rifle that is butt heavy and won't point isn't a rifle.  Its a handgun.  Calling it a "scout" doesn't improve the situation.

There's a write up on it in the new American Rifleman. Kindof glanced over it. Man from Ruger said demand was beyond capacity. Guess someone likes it. Not for me tho.

The biggest difference, is that a Remington would be accurate. ;D

Biggest difference is that the Remington has a 20 inch barrel, not a 16 incher.
