Glyphosate Prices...going down
« on: September 03, 2010, 02:15:54 AM »
Last Summer glyphosate (Roundup and its equivalent) was very high priced and now is coming down considerably.  Tractor Supply is selling 2.5 gallons for $89 and change.  I bought 2.5 gallons from Diamond R Fertilizer and Supply for $75 delivered.  XsAg.com says bulk buyers can get Gly between a range of $12 and $24 per gallon delivered.  Since I don't purchase enough to get that "discount" I am wondering what others are finding in their localities?

I haven't been in the game for years now.  Monsanto was notorious for selling many different concentrations, especially when comparing "home owner" sales to ag sales. The extreame price difference in gallon and quarts compared to bulk and even 2x2.5 containers as well.

As I understand it now the manufacturers may add proprietary adjuvants to the jug further confusing price. The adjuvants typically must be added so being included isn't a bad thing but can confuse cost.

If a person could "share" the cost of one of those bulk containers with a neighbor...  For my own personal use I would save about a dozen jugs from a days spraying and rinse them into my pump up sprayer. You might investigate alternative packaging for yourself.

Leading up to the Olympics in China the production of Glyphosate dropped markedly, creating a dramatic American increase in pricing.  As I understand it, the leading (only?) producer of Glyphosate is China and they wanted their air, water, earth to appear "healthier" for the Olympics.  Urban Myth perhaps, but that's my story and I am sticking to it.  Now that their production is back to "normal" the price is down considerably.

Current Glyphosate "pricing" ranges from XsAg:
Product                                   Trading Range                            UOM
Glyphosate Plus Surfactant        $8.95 - $11.75                        GL
Glyphosate Plus Surfactant        (Truck Load)   Call for pricing    GL

Roundup Powermax                   $14.75 - $15.75                     GL
Roundup Powermax                  (Truck Load)   Call for pricing     GL

I think the patent rights has run out and other manufacturers are getting in the game is why prices are dropping. I wouldn't even buy large quantities right now while prices were going down. Leastwise that's what my farmer friend tells me.

Yes Sir.  That would be me.  Welcome to the Graybeard Outdoors Forums.

Some background:  I asked for and started this Wildlife and Land Management Issues Forum on GBO to seek a wider experience base than just QDMA Forums.  You will see quite a few differences and, at the same time, similarities.

At QDMA, it is all about food plotting for deer.  Forums are significantly different there.  GBO provides a much wider range of forums as you can see and on subjects that QDMA is not going to support.

I tried for years to get QDMA to "categorize" their forums a little more.  A single post is "lost" there lightning fast on their limited number of forums and significantly high post counts.  They could also "slice the baloney" thinner, meaning add some forums in order to "compartmentalize" some topics (they could take note of some of the GBO Forums) but that is food for discussion there.  They do what they believe is right for QDMA on the single subject of deer and they do that very well.

With roundup here it comes in different %'s and cost is way different. I started using Agri supplys brand of weed control and have had good luck with it. I haven't bought any this year but in the past it was about half RU cost. BTW they say you can drink the Agri product ( no I would not) . I spray and it takes about 5 days to kill all plants . They also have one that kills broad leaf plants but not gtass. They are on line.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

In my area (W. TX), generic glyphosate in 30 gal drums is going for about $750 right now.

$25/gallon x 30 gallon drum ($750) is a lot higher than it was!  Guess the price fluctuation and lowering trend has turned around.

That is $32.00/gallon and on par with bbgot.  Not a good trend for food plotters.
