95 ford f-150 transfer case lever won't go low
« on: September 08, 2011, 12:46:43 PM »
Hey all! Maybe some of you fella's can help out with this. In my old ford the transfer case will go into high range just fine. Then to put it in low range you have to push the lever down and pull it back toward the seat to get it into low range. The problem is, I cannot get that lever to push down. I havent used the low range in awhile, but the last time I did it worked fine. Any of you know how to take that apart? Can you give some advise please? Thank's scout4<><

Now I'm no mechanic and can't tell you anything about how to tear it down or put it back together. I have a simple philosophy.

If it moves oil/grease it and iffen it don't use a bigger hammer.

My simple take would be to see if ya can find a linkage to oil/grease and regardless if ya do or don't pound on that lever a bit to make it go down. I've owned a couple of older Ford pickups with 4x4 and three Broncos. At times it can be difficult to shift into low range.

Hints ya gotta be in neutral before ya try, foot on brake also seems to make it easier why I dunno. Push down hard then give it a pop with your hand. That always worked on my Fords.

Thanks for your reply Graybeard! Since I first posted this here I've found out what to do from a ford truck mechanic. Have a great weekend! scout4<><

I took off the boot cover over the handle/lever. When you look down in there, you see the spring punger for putting transfer case into gear. Pulled up on the rubber boot cover and spayed lots of a good quaility penatrating oil down into that cylinder plunger. Then let it sit overnight, an spray lubed it again. after about 2 hours I started to work the handle/lever, the spring was free, and I was able to push down on the lever and pull back into low range wiyhout a problem. The mechanic said after its loosen up to use a good oil, I used 3 in one oil, an get some down into that spring/plunger cylinder. set the boot back in place, an works like new! Got er fixed! ;)  scout4<><
