Old Bullets
« on: January 27, 2009, 11:55:41 AM »
Anyone hunt with the old 224 Herter's Wasp Waist Sonic 55 gr or Nosler Zipedo 55 gr bullets?   A friend gave me some from a friend's dad a few years ago. What about accuracy?

Herter sold CHEEP things. Some had great quality. Some not. Weigh the Herter bullets and unless you got the rare birds you will find quite a variation. Not consistent with best accuracy. Since no more are available, don't get attached. Mr. Corbin, Dave thinks that this was some kind of manufacturing mistake that old Geo. the super salesman was taking advantage of. De Haas thought that his bolt actions were Mark X seconds... XKE and J9 anyway.

Noslers have always had a much better, more consistent rep. Later bullets may be prettier with colorful plastic noses. Does anyone think an animal can see that pretty tip as the bullet arrives??? These should shoot well, but what the gun likes is the final test. luck.

I agree with iiranger in regards to Herter's products.  FWIW, I've never used either brand bullet myself, but those I've talked with that have used the Nosler Zipedo have spoken very highly of them!

Load them and shoot them. It depends on how many you have as to how much time you want to spend on working up a load for them, but with the price of bullets today you can at least use them for practice ammo.

Not with 22 Zipedo, but I killed a 3pt. WT buck in about 1971 with one in 243 dia. Ran the usual 30 yards when shot through the lungs. Wonder how Mr. Herter got that waist on those things though? Muddy
