It was made before mine my serial Number is N 268XXX and is rather old being pinned and recessed.  Mine is a
28-2.  I do not know other than it' after 1954 and before 1986.
That's all I can find in the blue book.

Hello
I assume there is an N Prefix before the serial number ? If there is, Yours would have been made in 1974 era. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Hello
The S-Prefix ran from 1946-1970. The-N-Prefix started after that. regards, Hammerdown

Hello
If you would Tell us what Prefix it starts with Before the serial numbers then we can tell the Year of it, as both serial numbers cross each other in the N Prefix and S-Series prefix. Regards, Hammerdown.

Hello
According to the serial number you gave I would say it shipped around August-September 1959 time span. This should be a Four screw revolver meaning Three screws on the side plate and one in front of the trigger guard. Most came with Magna style stocks and in this time span should be stamped in the crane area with MOD. 28. The Four screw examples were a Rather short run as they switched to Three screw example guns around 1961-1962 time span. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

The S&W Forum site had a sticky about this. May still be there. That's how I pinned my 28 down as being made in '58. It was confirmed by S&W after that.

Hello William
The N-Prefix series started in 1970 for all series of the N-Frame revolvers. In the reference material I have it appears yours was made around June 1978 time span. Of course this is an educated guess from other serial number's in that time frame being close to yours in sequence, so a factory letter would be the only way to know for sure of your exact ship date of your revolver. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Picked up another 28-2
SN N10887
What say you on age Hammerdown
ALSO--I am noticing that  in S & W---the & is not an &---if that makes any sense. It appears to be an "o" with some other markings alongside OR the & stamped almost sideways but a bit different design.
Blessings

Hello Willaim
Your serial number point's to a date of 1970. The Ampersand's changed over time at S&W meaning the & Prefix on your guns barrel. They also changed on the factory address portion in the Lower left corner of the guns frame. The earliest examples had a Large Ampersand with a very noticeable Slant to it. As time wore on, the slant of it was much less as the size of it decreesed. They call the large early examples Lazy Ampersands.... Hammerdown

Hello William
There are no Dumb questions. To me an Idiot is one that does not ask questions, and goes through life wondering with no answer's to their questions as my Grandfather told me that you will only learn something if you ask questions, so don't beat your self up by calling your self an Idiot, you are certainly not one and I am glad to assist you any time, if I don't have an answer I have several S&W colleagues I can ask to answer your questions then we both will learn from it. Yes, The ampersand's did change much in the S&W stampings. They also changed in the four line address stamp as far as slant of the Amapersand over the years.....

Good Morning All,

My M28-2 is numbered N5611xx and I believe it shipped in 1978 or 1979.  I am relying on faded memories but believe I got it in 79 or 80.

This is the one I had rebored and converted to 45 ACP.  Looking to get a holster similar to what williamlayton has for it.  I just reworked another pair of grips and may duplicate them in American Ivory.
