Extra Barrel Storage ?
« on: April 19, 2011, 10:43:53 PM »
Now that I have a few of these extra Handi barrels , I'm starting to look for a way to store them . Right now I have a shelf in my gun safe with a bunch of barrels just laying on top one another, some scoped, some iron sites....
I also have a big tool box made into a handi rifle box, but the scoped barrels won't fit as they are too long with the scopes attached...

Eventually I want to build 4 Foot Locker type boxes, one for each receiver and fitted barrels, along with cleaning kit and ammo storage . I plan to give each grandson a rifle with a set of barrels....
I'd like to see some pictures of how you guys are storing your barrels ......        Thanks !!  Papa Jack

This is what worked good for me. It'll hold several barrels, depending how wide the door is. Took off the door panel so I could get a small piece of plywood behind it, to screw in the eye bolts into and reinforce it. Just check your clearance for the locking mechanism. I glued the bolts into the ends of a cut off an arrow shaft that is the right size for the barrels to hang on, and hooked a short bongie cord to help hold the barrels to the door.

I have a couple barrels on the wall, drive a 2½" drywall screw into the stud, slip a piece of vinyl tubing over the screw to protect the barrel. But I store the rest on their own frame!!   ;D

Interesting Ideas, thank's fellas ....
I have a "strong box" welded up, made it out of 3/16" steel sheet, and 4" steel channel with 2" Angle to stiffen the doors. The box measures 8 ft long, 2 ft deep, 6ft high. with a center divider, two doors. Not really a "safe" as I only put pad locks on it.
I thought about using some rubber coated hangers from Home Depot or Lowes, screw em thru the doors and hang the barrels on the inside.
I'll give this some thought, thanks again Guys !      Papa Jack

When I had allot of Contender barrels and early on many H&R extra barrels I used wooden "Hat Pegs".

I did a job for a guy and bought a case of them. He had a baseball hat collection...a LARGE ONE!! It filled a large bedroom, floor to ceiling all walls! So I had some left over. I have made a couple racks with them. I have a hafa a dozen in the side of my loading bench to keep rifles form falling over. I also made two racks for my safe room, floor to ceiling. I am using part of it for some shorties!! The Handi grip stocks and short barrels work great on it!!  Sorry no pics now. If interested I'll snap a pic tonight..

CW, I would like to see some pics if you have time. Like to see other peoples ideas, some are great. I've been gonna put something to hold a couple rifles from falling while standing against my bench.
I better do it soon or I'll be kicking myself one of these days ;D Thanks

The additional barrel storage was one of the reasons I put all my barrels on dedicated stocks and frames.  To me, it is just as easy to store a rifle as it is a barrel.  We don't have kid problems playing with guns, so five sit over my side of the bed and 5 over Patty's....all loaded and ready.  The rest are in a safe.  With my six dog security system, I don't think I'll be surprised by anyone.  The two dogs in the house would wipe out a stranger.  All the locals know Patty is deadly with rifle or handgun and knife, bow and tomahawk.....myself too for that matter.  Although, Patty is better than I am in all of them.

A rack of plastic plumbing pipe would give you something to slip barrels down into.

So now where is this store ;D Very nice set up CW. I had a couple of those pegs a long time ago. Stained them I think. I only need a spot for two or maybe four to hold guns against my bench when changing barrels, stocks, or seeing what frame fits what barrel. Bet they are around here somewhere, Never Throw Anything Away ::)

I just wrap them in gun sacks and stand them all next to each other on one side of the safe.  Some of the sacks have been cut off and the extra is sewed ( I actually ran the sewing machine to do this ) to make a pistol gun sack.  I wish they made 30" gun sacks and sold them for a lower price.

I got tired of them setting in corners, so I made a simple rack to hold them so I can put them on a shelf.

Here is the same on the bench

The barrels in the pictures are 44 Mag, 223 Ultra Var., 444 Marlin and 30-30. The 22K Hornet and 357 Max are on frames ;)
