Need Suggestions
« on: January 01, 2004, 06:35:50 AM »
I figured you guys might have some suggestions.  I'm looking for a hunting rifle with a Winchester '85 type High-Wall action in .308, 30-06, 270 or similar caliber.  It'll be used for whitetail hunting.  Browning High-Walls would certainly fit the bill but I'm also set on getting one with a pistol-grip stock.  One suggestion was to obtain a Browning BPCR and have it rebarreled to the desired caliber. Seems like an expensive approach and the forearm on the BPCR would likely not match up with the slimmer barrel.  Does anyone make a High-Wall with a pistol grip stock?

Hello Wayne,
The Browning 78s, except for the .45/70, had a pistol grip stock and were made in the some of the calibers you mentioned. If you are set on using iron sights the Williams Fool Proof 1885 will fit receiver scope holes on both the 78 and 85 models. However the 78s had no front sight.
If you are going to use a scope a 78 might be the solution.
I don't know if you have used one of the straight grips 85s but the straight grip feels better than you might think. If you want to meet at ARC you are welcome to shoot my 85.

Ed,

I sure appreciate your offer to try out your '85.  I have shot a Browning '85 and the stock is not bad, but I'm still set on a pistol-grip version.  I plan on mounting a scope so the '78 is a good suggestion.  I'll keep a look out for one.  Thanks.

I any of you other guys have other suggestions I sure like to hear them.

Several folks are importing HW copies from Italy I think. You might look into one of them. Should only require a rebarreling. I'm pretty sure I've seen some with pistol grip stocks. Not sure which importers have them but try the usual suspects that import the Italian guns.
